Under the direction of the US Executive Director and working with the Board of Directors and the global Animals Asia team, you will be responsible for strategic development as well as day to day delivery of increasing and diversifying income, identifying and engaging new donors as well as uplifting current donors, and increasing philanthropic giving. As a member of the team, you will deputize for the Executive Director as required, in particular sharing your broad experience to help upskill the wider team.

Overview of Role and Responsibilities:

You will have the expertise and confidence to drive the strategic development of your income streams independently, coupled with the collaborative skills to work with a global team to implement it effectively.

  • Build and manage a development plan to meet the US market’s annual and long-term goals and strategy.

    Undertake an audit of current activity across income streams to identify opportunities for growth.

  • Develop a personal portfolio of 100+ prospective donors located throughout the country, with a primary focus on the Los Angeles market. Execute a cultivation and solicitation strategy, raising approximately $800K of the annual $1.8M goal for the US. This includes major gifts, mid-level giving, corporate and workplace giving, grants and planned giving.

  • Manage other fundraising activity including: 3rd party fundraising, support groups, peer-to-peer fundraising, cause related marketing, and local events and initiatives.

  • Serve as the point person to the global Individual Giving team. Maintain oversight over direct mail appeals, telemarketing and other fundraising initiatives that pertain to the US market.

  • Work with the Executive Director and Global Major Gifts and Campaign Director on establishing and building a major gifts committee in 2021.

  • Assist in board development. Report to the Executive Director, board and global leadership on US fundraising efforts

  • Support the Executive Director in the strategic development of the wider fundraising strategy as required.

    Details:

  • Develop and demonstrate strategies for prospecting, cultivating and stewarding a portfolio of individuals, foundations and corporate partners (i.e. five, six and seven figure donations) as well as planned gifts to ensure the highest engagement and participation while increasing annual gift levels of giving.

    Major Gifts ($350K goal) / Mid-level Donors ($100K goal) – 70% of your time

    Grow a major gifts program including identification/qualification, cultivation and solicitation of major and mid-level donors.

  • Ensure all solicitation and cultivation plans, as well as interactions, are up to date on the CRM.

  • Develop individual donor strategies to renew and upgrade donor gifts.

  • Oversee prospect research and develop a thorough qualification process.

  • Be proactive in ensuring you develop an excellent knowledge of Animals Asia’s work, liaising with global colleagues as required, to prepare and present presentations and proposals.

  • Lead the donor stewardship program and acknowledgement process.

  • Provide support and briefings to internal stakeholders and work collaboratively across multiple teams.

  • Work closely with our Global Major Gifts and Campaign Director and program team to find engaging, exciting funding propositions including solutions to generate unrestricted income and multi-year gifts.

  • Work with the global team on developing and growing the mid-level donor program for the US.

  • Foundations ($150K goal)/Corporate and Workplace Giving ($50K goal) – 15% of your time:

  • Collaborate with the global foundation and trusts manager on submitting grant proposals to existing funders while also identifying new foundations to approach.

  • Provide technical assistance on grant applications as needed.

  • Ensure evaluation reports are submitted in a timely manner.

  • Stay abreast of current developments in the field, especially related to Donor Advised Funds.

  • Grow and develop corporate giving and workplace giving.

  • Planned Gifts ($75K goal) – 5% of your time:

  • Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.

  • Other ($75K goal) – 10% of your time:

  • Lead other local fundraising initiatives to include: 3rd party fundraising, support and volunteer groups, peer-to-peer fundraising, cause-related marketing, special events, Giving Tuesday, end of year match campaign, webinar series and global online auction.

  • Reporting, Budgets, Strategy and Compliance:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a rolling three-year fundraising strategy and budget.

  • Prepare an annual phased incoe and expenditure budget and quarterly forecasting.

  • Support the Executive Director with the wider budgets as required.

  • Generate and manage a strong pipeline of opportunities on the CRM.

  • Ensure effective work plans are in place to deliver the projected income for all financial and non-financial KPIs.

  • Prepare regular reports and evaluations for the Executive Director and the US board as required.

  • Deliver against agreed income and expenditure targets.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.

  • Continuous Improvement and interdepartmental relations:

  • Contribute to the on-going review, development and implementation of changes to improve the productivity and efficiency of Animals Asia.

  • Participate in staff training and performance and development appraisal process to assist in the achievement of Animals Asia objectives and mission.

  • Ensure that inter-department and inter-personal relationships are positive, collaborative, and contribute to the overall mission of Animals Asia.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with management in regard to work procedures, employee relations and procurement related concerns.

  • Support colleagues in activities outside of your specific job description on occasion and as required.

  • Professional Experience and Qualifications

  • Knowledge:

  • Understanding of Major Giving fundraising principles and strategies.

    Demonstrated experience, success and progressive responsibility in fundraising and development.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of local funding sources, strong relationships with donors, funders and community leaders.

  • Understanding and familiarity with animal welfar issues and sector.

    Computer literate with a working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and experience with fundraising database software, ideally Blackbaud products.

  • Skills/Attributes:

  • Passion, imagination, vision, leadership, and integrity.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, to build public support, to develop and strengthen fundraising infrastructure, to inspire staff, to develop strong working relationships with the global team and to develop effective fundraising programs.

  • Ability to set goals strategically and oversee execution.

  • Understanding and commitment to the mission and work of Animals Asia with the credibility and persuasiveness to secure support from others.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with various internal and external stakeholders and constituents.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, set goals and objectives, organize, and implement to completion.

  • Strong budget management skills including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.

  • Decisive and resourceful and takes responsibility for achieving results, as well as work successfully with limited resources.

  • Effective communicator, skilled at writing and public speaking; adept at writing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence, and other types of materials to enhance fundraising.

    Ability to juggle many responsibilities at once, and to operate both independently and with the flexibility to be part of a team.

  • Solution focused with a creative approach to issues and a ‘can do’ attitude

  • An organized individual with strong creative and conceptual skills

  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to challenges, to work effectively in a small, diverse and busy cross-functional team environment with minimal supervision

  • Ability to travel in and out of state and work non-standard hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. May require international travel.

  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and experience with fundraising database software, ideally Blackbaud products.

  • Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of fundraising experience, including major gifts experience.
