About the Department

The Office of the Provost at the University of Chicago was established in 1963 when Edward H. Levi was appointed the first Provost of the University. Since then, the responsibilities of the Provost and the Office have expanded to include not only academic planning and appointments but academic initiatives, arts programming, space planning and allocation, the University's budget, diversity initiatives, faculty program development, and many other manners of academic and administrative support. The staff in the Office of the Provost support the University's community of scholars, their shared ideals, and the core values that make the University a singular intellectual destination. Together with the University's deans, directors, and department chairs, the Office of the Provost provides the opportunities, infrastructure, and resources that encourage our faculty and other scholars to pursue their finest work.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of a Vice Provost, the Associate Provost is the senior staff member and advisor to the Vice Provost and supports the planning, development, and implementation of a range of high-priority activities related to the cultivation and advancement of the University’s academic mission. The Associate Provost serves as the administrative staff lead on the academic appointment process and procedures for academic appointees/employees, and reviews all the academic appointments. The Associate Provost serves on University-wide working groups related to the portfolio, including accreditation and collective bargaining agreements. The successful Associate Provost will be an excellent researcher, writer, and strategic thinker who is keen to develop, as well as improve and expand on, the administrative capabilities and systems utilized for academic employment. The Associate Provost serves as a representative of the Office of the Provost to internal and external audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Sustain ongoing efforts of significance related to the cultivation and advancement of the academic mission of the University and develop and implement new procedures and policies for high-priority activities.
  • Serve as the administrative staff lead on academic appointment processes and procedures; review of all academic appointments; and review of reappointment and progression for tenure track faculty and other academic appointees.
  • Synthesize disparate information from campus partners through skilled decision making in assessing and triaging key information.
  • Serve as the first point of contact in the Office of the Provost for the academic affairs offices, including for special appointment-related questions, for postdoctoral researcher matters, and for the academic hiring module.
  • Communicate with academic and/or administrative units, updating them as necessary on the status of academic appointments.
  • Structure and execute operational and strategic initiatives by developing work plans, gathering and synthesizing relevant data, doing research, and analyzing and developing final recommendations.
  • Represent the Office of the Provost on specific University-wide planning working groups and committees; develop and maintain productive relationships with a range of stakeholders across campus; convene meetings of academic affairs offices across the University.
  • Serve as a member of the accreditation team and partner with colleagues in the Office of the Provost and in the College.
  • Serve as the University-wide academic appointee data steward.
  • In partnership with the Vice Provost, make decisions and generate recommendations that contribute to the solution of University-wide strategic activities.
  • Together with the Vice Provost, maintain all policies and Provostial guidance documents for Faculty, and guidelines on appointments for Other Academic Appointees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements ​​
 

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Doctoral degree preferred.

Experience:

  • At least 7-10 years of progressive relevant experience required.
  • Professional experience at an educational institution preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Office environment.
  • Fast-paced environment.
  • Sit at a computer for 4-6 hours.
  • Periodic walking to other campus locations.
  • Option for hybrid work schedule.
