Position Highlights

The Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona invites applications for Steward Observatory Prize Postdoctoral Fellowships (multiple hires expected). For information on specific fellowships offered, visit Steward Observatory Prize Fellowships.

Successful candidates will be expected to lead high-profile, independent research in any area of theoretical and/or computational astrophysics as well as collaborate with Steward Observatory faculty and scholars in the Department of Astronomy. Candidates are expected to support an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in research, mentoring, and service. Steward Observatory provides a stimulating research environment, with an active program of seminars, conferences, and visitors. The department supports a wide range of theoretical research programs, in topics such as gravity and relativistic astrophysics, cosmology, compact objects, galactic dynamics, astrophysical fluid dynamics, galaxy formation, star formation, stellar and binary evolution and explosions, and planet formation. UArizona offers a world-class research environment in astrophysics with strong collaborations between the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, and Planetary Sciences, the UA Data Science Institute, the Arizona Space Institute, and NSF’s NOIRLab. Interested candidates are welcome to inquire with individual faculty about informal virtual visits. Fellows will have access to the extensive observational and computational facilities of the Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory, including the 10-meter Submillimeter Telescope on Mt. Graham, the 12-meter ALMA Prototype Antenna on Kitt Peak, the 2×8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, and the 6.5m Baade and Clay Telescopes. In addition, the new University-wide Research Data Center provides access to high-end, local supercomputing resources (up to ~ 380 TFLOPS) including distributed, shared-memory, and GPU architectures. Fellows are also encouraged to join the interdisciplinary Theoretical Astrophysics Program (TAP) that includes members of both the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the Physics Department.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead an independent research agenda centered on theoretical and computational methods; disseminate work through publications and presentations; contribute to public-engagement opportunities.
  • Implement and/or develop research initiatives, groups and/or collaborations, publications, and/or events (talks, workshops, visitor programs, etc.) as needed and relevant to defined and independent research agendas and that support an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in research, mentoring, and service.
  • Collaborate with theoretical and/or observational department faculty and scholars, including organizing collaborative meetings, supervising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and supporting an inclusive academic environment.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed all the requirements of a PhD. in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics or related science upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research experience relevant to one or more of the scientific areas: gravity and relativistic astrophysics, cosmology, compact objects, galactic dynamics, astrophysical fluid dynamics, galaxy formation, star formation, stellar and binary evolution and explosions, and/or planet formation.
