Chief of the Radiation Physics Division

Job Description


The Physical Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) anticipates the need for a Division Chief for its Radiation Physics Division (RPD) (https://www.nist.gov/pml/radiation-physics). The RPD has approximately 40 permanent scientific and engineering staff and over 20 students, postdoctoral candidates, and contractors. The permanent technical staff consist primarily of chemists and physicists with PhDs. The division has a primary responsibility to maintain and advance world-class physical measurement capabilities for realizing and disseminating standards for radiation dose (the gray ) and radioactivity (the becquerel ).  The division additionally undertakes measurement science research and standards development to support medical imaging, radiation therapies, and diagnostics; radiation protection and environmental radioactivity measurement; and chemical/biological/radiation/nuclear/explosives countermeasures in homeland security.  The division also performs fundamental and applied neutron physics research including at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR).  The principal duties for the Division Chief are performed on the NIST Gaithersburg campus.

Interested candidates should have research and management experience and a degree in a physical science or engineering field in accordance with the OPM qualification standards (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/). Whether submitting a Curriculum Vitae or resume, the candidate must provide sufficient information to clearly articulate their leadership and management capabilities and experience, including personnel and financial management and knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and guidance. This information may be provided in a separate cover letter.  Individuals should also include a list of publications and a list of talks and presentations covering at least the past 5 years showing research experience. The identified candidate will be hired at the ZP-V (GS-15 equivalent) level.

Depending on the professional background of the identified candidate, they will be hired as a Supervisory Physicist, ZP-1310, Grade V; Supervisory Chemist, ZP-1320, Grade V; Supervisory Physical Scientist, ZP-1301, Grade V; or Supervisory General Engineer, ZP-0801, Grade-V.  The applicant’s Curriculum Vitae or Resume must provide positive evidence that they have performed highly creative or outstanding research that has led to or can lead to major advances in a physical science or engineering discipline. Applicants must be able to show at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-14 level.  The position requires that the selected individual obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
