The Opportunity 

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) serves as a comprehensive resource for issues related to gender and race in amateur, collegiate, and professional sports and the media. The institute researches and publishes a variety of studies, including annual studies of student-athletes graduation rates and racial attitudes in sports as well as the internationally recognized Racial and Gender Report Card, an assessment of racial and gender hiring practices in amateur, collegiate, and professional sports and the media. The institute also monitors critical ethical issues in college and professional sport. 


This position facilitates the DeVos Sport Business Management strategic initiatives with specific responsibilities helping lead The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports (TIDES), as well as teaching courses in the DeVos program. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-earning position.


This position reports to the director, DeVos Sport Business Management Program, and plays a key role in realizing DeVos’ research mission by providing leadership for the operational and publishing functions of the TIDES reports. This position provides strong leadership for the graduate program and undergraduate minor and is deeply involved in building a climate of excellence. It is particularly important to foster strong partnerships with the professional sports and university communities.

Specific responsibilities include conducting a thorough review of the TIDES reports program, maintaining the TIDES reports, providing customer relationship management to clients, hiring, and managing a team of graduate students, and working to maintain the DeVos SBM world-class status. The faculty member will work with the director in realizing reports in a timely manner. 

The duties for this position may include but are not limited to the following:
Strategy and Implementation

  • Support the TIDES plan as requested.

  • Facilitate the development of and implementation of the TIDES reports.

  • Oversee a team of graduate assistants.

  • Recruit new graduate assistants annually.

  • Support a system for identifying and implementing best practices for sports organizations.

  • Improve engagement of, and value to TIDES stakeholders.

  • Support DeVos Sport Business Management graduate program and undergraduate minor in cocurricular activities.
     

Professional Development

  • Outreach to identify potential TIDES clients.

  • Leveraging faculty capability for TIDES engagement.
     

Teaching Responsibilities

  • 3 courses per academic year, with one of those courses in the graduate program.
     

College Services

  • Represent program on any college committees.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree (for instructor) from an accredited institution with an emphasis on sport business management or a J.D. (for instructor) from an accredited institution with experience practicing sports business law or industry experience in sport business law or management.at the time of application. This may be pursued under a wide range of disciplines including business, education, sociology, and law.
     

  • A doctoral degree (for a lecturer) from an AACSB accredited institution with an emphasis on sport business management at the time of application. This may be pursued under a wide range of disciplines including business, education, sociology, and law. 
     

  • Previous teaching experience in sport business related courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. Strong writing skills. 
     

  • Strong evidence of quantitative and qualitative data collection. Previous experience managing graduate assistants.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (for a lecturer) from an accredited institution with an emphasis on sport business management at the time of application. This may be pursued under a wide range of disciplines including business, education, sociology, and law. 
     

  • Experience in survey data and research. Evidence of strong teaching evaluations, editing and copywriting experience, understanding of statistics and measurement.
     

  • Experience in writing reports.
     

  • Working knowledge of higher education.
