Position Details
| General Statement | The position will be at the Northwestern Agricultural Research Center (NWARC) near Kalispell, Montana. NWARC is one of seven off-campus research centers in the Department of Research Centers. The position is one of two tenure-track positions at NWARC. NWARC consists of 225 irrigated and dryland acres and is well-equipped with modern field plot equipment, laboratory equipment, facilities, and greenhouse space. The major commodities include cereals, forages, oilseed, and pulse crops. The research center is located 10 miles from Flathead Lake – the largest freshwater lake in the western U.S., and 45 miles from Glacier National Park. The area features a wide range of outdoor summer and winter recreational opportunities. |

| Duties and Responsibilities | Develop a nationally recognized field research program addressing agronomic and biotic factors that limit the economic potential and environmental sustainability of crop and forage-based production systems in northwestern Montana. Potential research could include investigating northwestern Montana cropping systems, applying an integrated pest management approach to weeds and other biotic stressors in cropping systems, and investigating biotic stress-based interactions with crop nutrient use efficiency and precision agriculture. This research program will include annual variety development research in collaboration with MSU plant breeders. The incumbent is expected to cooperate with all programs at NWARC, other public-sector scientists, extension personnel, farmers, private industry, advisory groups, and commodity organizations to develop research priorities and assist in developing management recommendations. Expectations for the scholarship include publication in refereed journals and reviewed materials and presentations at scientific and producer meetings. Development of popular press materials and teaching discipline-related topics to accommodate student demand are encouraged. Securing extramural funds from state, regional, and national sources, including the agricultural industry, is required. Conduct of research expectations includes on-station, off-station, and “field” scale research trials in cooperation with scientists, producers, and extension agents of counties served by the NWARC. |
