Research Associate, Division of Nephrology & Center for Immunity, Inflammation & Regenerative Medicine

University of Virginia

Job Description

The Arandjelovic Lab in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology & Center for Immunity, Inflammation & Regenerative Medicine at the University of Virginia is seeking a post-doctoral Research Associate to join the team studying cell clearance/phagocytosis in inflammation, with focus on arthritis models. Apoptotic cells are frequently observed at sites of ongoing inflammation, and inefficient clearance of apoptotic cells can lead to secondary necrosis and the release of their cellular contents, which can further fuel the inflammatory process. However, the nature of dying cells, the cellular identity of phagocytes and the molecular events that contribute to clearance of apoptotic cells have been understudied in many inflammatory diseases, including arthritis. In other words, “who” are the cleaning crew and which “tools” are they using?

In the Arandjelovic lab, we focus on addressing the following questions:

1.  Who are the phagocytes in the healthy and inflamed joints?

2.  What are they “eating” (infiltrating leukocytes, tissue resident cells)?

3. Does modulation of cell clearance pathways impact disease parameters?

These studies will identify new modulators of inflammatory and autoimmune disease and uncover novel pathways that can be targeted for therapeutic benefit.

The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

For additional information please contact Dr. Sanja Arandjelovic at sa2h@virginia.edu , or call 434-924-1875.
