Job Summary

Under the direction of the Security Services Administration, the Manager will be the lead for 24/7 operations of the UCSF Health or Campus Security Divisions as assigned. This position will be a primary manager for any UCSF Health hospitals and clinics or Campus locations they are assigned to. The position will also be required to act as a liaison with numerous other UCSF Health and Campus departments including but not limited to the Lock Shop, Engineering, Telecommunications, and UCPD.

The incumbent will supervise staff and maintain the records for Security Services. The incumbent may also be responsible for coordinating training and compliance needs. The position requires an individual who can work independently and perform and prioritize multiple tasks.

The incumbent may also be responsible for assisting the director of the Workplace Violence Prevention (WVP) program throughout UCSF. The incumbent may support the WVP Committee and will be required to work collaboratively with various stakeholders such as the Department of Nursing, Safety, and Security Services, Risk Management; Facilities, Emergency Management, and other related departments, and may be required to present information to various groups, including but not limited to senior leadership, patient care unit staff, and ambulatory clinic staff.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however, a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Security Services Division strives to ensure the safety and security of learners, staff, and patients inside and outside of UCSF properties, clinics, and health facilities. They assist UCSF PD to provide a crime-free and safe environment through the highest level of professional services, integrity, respect, and excellent customer service.

The UCSF Security Services Division is a Division in the UCSF Police Department. The UCSF Police
The department’s overriding mission is to enhance the safety and quality of life for students, faculty, and staff across the UCSF system. By working in partnership with the community, UCSF PD strives to promote public safety and crime prevention through education and enforcement; maintain public order while preserving the legal rights of all individuals; provide efficient and courteous service; and reduce the impact of crime.

The UCSF Police Department is known for its community service orientation, effectiveness at preventing crime through campus community involvement, and for providing a safe living and working environment for the promotion of education, research, and public service.

The Security Services Division provides site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at university and contract locations.
Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre- and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children’s Hospitals; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute (LPPI). UCSF is considered one of the nation’s premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related area (business, safety, criminal justice, public health, public administration) or four years of equivalent experience/training
  • Two or more years of Lead experience
  • Experience managing/leading safety operations and security programs
  • Experience in the areas of finance and budget management
  • Broad knowledge of the organization, HR, and UC policies and processes
  • Proven ability to perform, train, and supervise all aspects of security function
  • Excellent Customer Service skills including working collaboratively cooperatively and supportive  and coordinating with others 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees.
  • Ability to communicate with Supervises, and work alongside multi-cultural, opposite gender, LGBTQ, aging, and disabled populations
  • Ability to communicate verbally, and in writing and to actively listen, provide advice to, and counsel employees; desire to relate with employees
  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills and good judgment. Ability to quickly evaluate issues, identify options for resolution, and solve problems under pressure. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.
  • Specialized training, certification, and /or experience in diffusing assaultive behavior
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate both large and small groups for training/education/meetings
  • Ability to assess complex issues. Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to work independently, good organizational skills, computer skills, motivated to seek continued education
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the health care field in a position involving considerable judgement and discretion
  • Background in WPV Program Implementation and investigation of WPV incidents
  • California State Guard Card
  • Certification in some form of diffusion assaultive behavior training (managing assaultive behavior, crisis prevention institute (CPI), McAfee Institute, etc.
  • Valid California Driver’s License
