The Rosenstiel School or Marine Atmospheric and Earth Science at the University of Miami is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Associate. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Brian Mapes and a PhD student in an NSF funded study of internal gravity waves, as seen on satellite animations of stratocumulus cloud decks. We will isolate, map, quantify and catalog these waves of dark and light which subtly modulate the cellular cloud structure and texture. Techniques include using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) or other texture-tracking methods, linking the flow divergence to wave-related cloud brightening and darkening through vertical motion. Candidates should have knowledge about the science of thin-layer fluid flow and cloud-topped boundary layers. Desirable skills include image-processing techniques such as PIV, Fourier analysis, and perhaps newer methods from computer vision, preferably in Python. Modern open-source scientific software practices and skills are also required, in order to reliably and transparently scale up prototype workflows to large archives of data. An attitude of curiosity will be important for this innovative work with methodological dimensions.

The University of Miami is an Equal Opportunity Employer - Females/Minorities/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.
