Academic Specialists/School Based Programs

REPORTS TO: Site Director of Elementary Programs

WORK SCHEDULE: Part-time; Generally scheduled during Power Hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Specialist will provide academic support for Club members an hour each day after school Monday-Friday. This position is designed to help the students' meet criteria of the Oklahoma Academic Standards through direct instruction and coordination with BGCOKC staff. This position requires a teacher with experience teaching phonics to elementary school students.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

The Academic Specialist is a certified teacher that works with small groups of children identified as struggling in any subject. They will work closely with the school and Boys & Girls Club to ensure student learning and academic success. The primary purpose of this role is to improve academic achievement for students struggling to meet the state standards and/or local expectations.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles related to youth development; ability to plan effectively; leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics and discipline; an understanding of the population of youth served by Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma County.
  • Ability to accurately understand all forms of communication from others, including listening. Will provide others with necessary, correct, and timely information and feedback when requested.
  • Ability to identify causes of problems and implement an appropriate course of action under the direction of the Site Director. Will gather relative and important information regarding issues and problems. Will seek new techniques and approaches in helping students find success.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for co-workers and youth in the program. Demonstrates responsible, ethical, and professional behavior. Will enhance and encourage the building up of co-workers and strive to meet goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate with Site Director, Principal, teachers and Club staff.
  • Ability to maintain contact with parents and volunteers, and external community groups.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university and an Oklahoma Teaching Certificate:

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The job requires working, standing, bending, turning, reaching, talking, listening; works in a clean, well-light, heated and ventilated building. On occasion, must work outside.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high energy level, be comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities, and effectively communicate with a variety of audiences in various settings.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 per week
