TITLE: Department Chair/Faculty for Nursing

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Department of Nursing at Dickinson State University strives to be in harmony with the university mission, “…to provide service relevant to the…health, and quality of life for the citizens of the state of N.D.” our primary role is to foster and facilitate the development of competent healthcare practitioners who are prepared to serve in a continually evolving health care environment.

The chair of the department teaches one half of the normal load (6 credits per semester), maintains appropriate scholarly activities, and provides service to the community. Further, the chair provides service to the campus and is the primary administrator for the department.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to the Dean of Instruction/Associate Provost


  • Registered Nurse who is eligible, or who holds a current unencumbered license as recognized by the ND Board of Nursing (NDBON). Ability to meet NDBON Continuing Education requirement of 12 contact hours for licensure renewal every two years.

  • Earned doctoral degree in nursing, or an earned master's degree in nursing and in progress of earning a doctoral degree from an accredited institution.

  • Two years minimum experience in each of the following areas are required: clinical nursing practice, teaching in baccalaureate and/or graduate nursing education programs, curriculum development and administration.

  • Increasingly progressive higher education leadership and/or related experience.

  • Experience in managing faculty, staff, and students.

  • Basic computer skills and the ability to adapt to the University systems and software.

  • Strong and empathetic communication, emotional intelligence.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Accurate record keeping skills.


  • Experience in curriculum, budget management and in administration are preferred.

COMPENSATION: Includes a salary of $80,000 - $90,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. And a comprehensive fringe benefit package, including employer-paid full-family coverage health insurance, TIAA retirement, tuition waiver benefits and much more.

Teaching Effectiveness
* The chair serves as a leadership exemplar of best practices in teaching. Teaching effectiveness includes, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Teach assigned class load.

  • Make appropriate preparations for the semester including syllabus preparation, preparation of lecture/class materials, preparation of tests, and assignments as appropriate, assessment of student learning outcomes, revision of course material when needed, and preparation of academic reports.

  • Act as a professional role model for students.

  • Communicate effectively with students.

  • Be punctual and utilize class time effectively.

  • Stay current in field of expertise.

  • Be available to students and provide assistance as needed.

Scholarship Activities and Self-Improvement
* The chair serves as a leadership exemplar of best practices in scholarship activities and self-improvement. Scholarship activities and self-improvement includes, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Evaluate and select material for classroom activities.

  • Create new courses.

  • Review professional curriculum material.

  • Professional reading and/or research for self-improvement and effectiveness.

  • Work toward advanced degree, continuing education, including experiential learning.

  • Participate in professional organizations.

  • Attend and present at conferences, workshops, conventions and seminars.

On-Campus Contributions to the University
* The chair should exemplify the first level of faculty leadership in the academy. To that end, the chair’s on-campus contributions provide department-level administration, management and leadership. Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing department full, part-time, and dual-credit faculty and staff (i.e. recruiting properly credentialed individuals, hiring, orienting, developing, mentoring, and evaluating – annual evaluations, etc.).

  • Managing department programs and curricula – this explicitly includes coordinating with other departments, and areas that manage the modality of instruction (i.e. online, IVN, off-site, etc.) as well as working with Curriculum Council, DNUS proposal initiation, etc.

  • Planning, formulating, proposing, and managing department budgets

  • Advising of students and auditing of transcripts

  • Taking responsibility for timely and effective department inter and intra-communication (i.e. VPAA Council, department meetings, etc.) as well as competent, accurate and timely completion and submission of reports and planning documents (e.g. program review, assessment plans and reports, accreditation reports – if applicable, etc.)

  • Serving on the VPAA Council

  • Responsible for the AASPN and BSN program accreditation and site visits, from ACEN as well as to uphold accreditation by the ND BON for both programs.

* Additional activities in this category may include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing recommendations and assisting with job placement

  • Recruiting (students and faculty/staff)

  • Raising funds

  • Serving on campus committees and councils

  • Conducting and/or assisting at clinics, workshops, camps, etc.

  • Supporting DSU’s continuing education-outreach efforts

  • Attending university functions

  • Advising student organizations

Off-Campus Contributions to the University
* Responsibility in this area involved exemplary leadership representation of and for the department and university to the broader university context. Activities in this category may include, but are not limited to:

  • Make speeches/giving presentations to community groups.

  • Organize and/or work with community organizations.

  • Belong to or hold office in community organizations.

  • Seek or hold governmental office or working on behalf of governmental candidates and/or organizations.

  • Serve on advisory boards.

  • Serve western North Dakota as a resource within area of expertise.
