Postdoctoral Scholar in Theoretical and Computational Plasma Astrophysics

Job Description

There will be two postdoctoral scholar openings in the research group of Prof. Sasha Philippov starting September 1, 2024 or shortly after. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal for a total of three years.

First position will be a postdoctoral fellowship in SCEECS collaboration, https://www.simonsceecs.com . The successful candidate will conduct independent and collaborative research in theoretical high-energy astrophysics of black holes and neutron stars, including (but not limited to) pulsar, magnetar and black hole magnetospheres, the physics of radiative magnetic reconnection and turbulence, and particle acceleration mechanisms in astrophysical disks and jets.  Interested candidates should additionally apply to SCEECS advertisement (https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/ee1df77b ) and select their preference for UMD as host institution.

Second position will be mainly devoted to the development of a new-generation particle-in-cell code for relativistic plasma physics, Entity (https://github.com/haykh/entity ). The successful candidate will design and implement new numerical algorithms, including novel grid structures, pair production and radiation processes, as well as hybrid fluid-kinetic numerical schemes. Additionally, ample time for independent and collaborative research in high-energy astrophysics will be available.

For both positions, a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field is required. A strong background in high-energy astrophysics, plasma physics, computational science and parallel computing is preferred. Successful candidates will have access to outstanding computational facilities, opportunities for collaboration and support for travel. Interested persons must submit a curriculum vitae, bibliography, a statement of research interests and arrange for three reference letters sent directly by the writers. All application materials should be sent via the linked Google form . Applications received by November 15 will be fully considered, but applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.
