Job Description


The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to work with Prof. Yifan Zhou on observational studies related to exoplanet discovery, formation, and atmospheric characterization. Specific topics include searching for protoplanets, high-contrast imaging observations of protoplanetary disks and young planetary systems, and spectroscopic characterization of giant planets and brown dwarfs. Applicants with experience in these research areas are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a vibrant exoplanet and planet formation group at the Astronomy Department at the University of Virginia. The successful candidate will also have access to the Astronomy Department's telescope resources, including the Large Binocular Telescope, the ARC 3.5-m Telescope at Apache Point Observatory, and the telescopes of Steward Observatory. There will be opportunities to advise undergraduate or graduate students.

This position is initially a one-year appointment, with renewal for an additional two one-year increments contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. The nominal start date is September 1, 2024

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in astronomy or a related field by the starting date of the appointment is required. Experience with planet formation, planetary atmospheric characterization, and high-contrast imaging observations is preferred.
