The Research Technologist II provides para-professional support to the veterinary, veterinary technical, and research staff in the care, use, and management of the UIC rodent colony at the Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL) department. Assistance includes rodent health assessments, treatments, biological sample collection, sentinel health monitoring program, rodent import/exports, technical support, training of research staff, quality assurance, and facility management support.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform clinical health assessments of rodents, maintain health records, and communicate with veterinary, research, and husbandry staff.
  • Perform treatments as deemed necessary by the clinical veterinarians.
  • Provide training for research staff (including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate or undergraduate students and technicians) on animal handling, compound administration techniques, and blood or other biological sample collection techniques in rodents.
  • Provide technical support to research staff including animal handling and restraint, administration of compounds, and blood or other biological sample collection in rodents, including rodents administered hazardous agents.
  • Assess rodents post-operatively and review surgical records to ensure compliance with the institutional perioperative care program.
  • Collect biological samples for sentinel health program testing, exportation of rodents, and facility transfers.
  • Assist with coordination of rodent imports and exports under veterinary supervision.
  • Provide husbandry and technical support for rodent BSL-3 facility and research.
  • Provide assistance with facility quality assurance program and assist with facility management and preparation for accreditation site visits and inspections including but not limited to measurement of room ventilation, light intensity, etc.
  • Perform additional support duties assigned by the clinical veterinarian and participate in special projects as needed.
 

Minimum Qualifications Required:

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological, chemical, or medical sciences (such as biology, pharmacology/toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, or medical technology), or a closely related field.
  • AND
  • One (1) year (12 months) of experience comparable to that gained as a Research Technologist I.
  • A Master’s Degree in biological, chemical, or medical sciences (such as biology, pharmacology/toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, or medical technology) or a closely related field may be substituted for 1 and 2 above.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • A minimum of 1 year of experience working with rodents in a research setting.
    • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification at the ALAT, LAT or LATG level preferred.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Products including Microsoft Word and Excel.
