The Post Doc for this position will be working with the Plant Breeding group at the Everglades REC with the University of Florida/ Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) in Belle Glade, Florida. The candidate will work on understanding how the current germplasm responds to newly proposed P fertilizer rates in romaine, iceberg, butterhead and leaf lettuce. Phosphorus is a key component of the cell structure and metabolism in plants, for example chlorophyll content and can affect plant metabolism. In this research, we will study the effects of reduced or increased P soil conditions on horticultural traits, postharvest (shelf life), resistance to diseases, and physiological disorders.

IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

Minimum Requirements:

A PhD degree (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant nutrition, Soil fertility or related field is required. The candidate must be willing to work in both indoor (lab) and outdoor (field) settings. They might be working in greenhouse at high temperatures. The postdoc must be willing to travel when necessary to assess experiments in growers’ fields. They could also travel to run experiments in other states with collaborators. Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with soil and plant tissue analysis using Melich-3, postharvest methods, PCR methods, QTL analysis using Genotyping by Sequencing are important for this position. Experimental design, advanced statistics for breeders are preferred but not obligatory. Ability to work independently and have a strong publication record.
