The Carnegie Mellon Biomedical Engineering department seeks to transform healthcare worldwide through interdisciplinary engineering innovation and to train future leaders and innovators in biomedical engineering.

We are currently hiring two Postdoctoral Research Associates to join our team. These are collaborative positions under the primary oversight of Dr. Cohen-Karni, director of the CMU Hybrid-Nanomaterials and Nano-Bioelectronics Group, and in collaboration with the Regenerative Biomaterials & Therapeutics Group, the Morphing Matter Lab, Biohybrid and Organic Robotics Group, and the NeuroMechatronics Lab. You will also be able to collaborate with team members at Georgia Tech (Dr. Josiah Hester), Northwestern (Dr. Jonathan Rivnay), and Rice University (Dr. Omid Veiseh) as well as DoE and DoD Labs.

We are currently working on integrated multidisciplinary research to develop cutting edge science and technologies to enhance bioelectrical devices functionality, performance, and longevity. We will be using unconventional approaches for the design and fabrication of bioelectrical platforms with clinical translation as the ultimate goal. Using unique bioelectrical sensors and actuators will allow us to tackle grand biomedical challenges such as wound healing, controlled therapeutics delivery and pain management.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of the department and university.

  • Collecting and analyzing data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.

  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies may be required depending on area and specialty.

  • Participating/assisting in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • A strong publication record in relevant journals, excellent verbal and written English communication skills, and an ability to work effectively with others is required.

  • A commitment to meet research project deadlines is required.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering on topics related to materials printing, (implanted) bioelectronics, electrocatalysis and/or electrochemistry, or biosensing is required.

  • Experience with in vivo experimentation is desired.

  • Experience programming in Matlab and/or Python is desired.

  • Experience with SEM/TEM/Raman/XPS/XRD is desired.

    • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
