Human Rights Campaign

Job Description

We strongly encourage people of color, transgender and non-binary people to apply. HRC is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes everyone, including non-LGBTQ+ people, to join our team. Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that people from marginalized communities are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At HRC, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

This position will be based in Washington, DC. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, starting at $250,000.00 annually.

Who are We

The Human Rights Campaign envisions a world where every member of the LGBTQ+ family has the freedom to live their truth without fear, and with equality under the law. We empower our 3 million members and supporters to mobilize against attacks on the most marginalized people in our community. The HRC Foundation creates impact through programs and initiatives designed to make transformational change in the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ people. We’ve spent over 40 years creating the most powerful movement for equality our country has ever seen. But despite this progress, LGBTQ+ people are confronting unprecedented levels of violence, discrimination, and fear - especially transgender people and people of color. Our goal is to ensure that all LGBTQ+ people are treated as full and equal citizens within our movement, across our country and around the world.

HRC consists of two separate non-profit organizations: the Human Rights Campaign, a 501(c)(4) organization that focuses on lobbying Congress and state and local officials for support of pro-LGBTQ+ bills, and mobilizing grassroots action amongst its members, and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that focuses on advocacy, education and research. The two corporate entities have distinct boards of directors, but with overlapping membership and a common strategic plan as blueprint for change. In addition, the Human Rights Campaign 501(c)(4) has a federal political action committee (PAC), Super PAC, and a variety of state PACs.

We tackle inequality on all fronts
Fighting for equality means we can’t afford to let anyone fall through the cracks. We work locally, nationally, and globally on issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community. HRC partners with people across demographics, industries, and governments to provide leadership on how to back up pro-equality statements with real action — and create a society where none of us is left behind.

How we’re making change today
The HRC Foundation drives solutions to improve the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ people - with a focus on those who sit at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities. This work is driven by professional training and leadership development programs that empower advocates and allies; by benchmarking and best practice guidance that strengthens institutions of our daily lives; by research and resources that educate the public; and by engaging stakeholders and community partners in civic engagement and public policy initiatives. The Senior Vice President, Programs, Research and Training is responsible for driving the strategy and leading the work managed by a talented team of more than 30 program staff.

In this moment of crisis, this role is a critical leader who is part of the senior team of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. Their mandate is to ensure that alongside our work to build political power, their programs drive solutions that help LGBTQ+ people where they go to school and work, when they navigate healthcare and as they lead in their communities. From leading technical assistance and training initiatives to leveraging programs to drive institutional and cultural change, a successful candidate will understand how to set strategies that meet the urgency of the moment while also leading to long-term power for the community through HRC’s work.

You will get to spearhead some amazing programs that have transformed the landscape for LGBTQ+ people, like our Workplace Equality Program, our Historically Black Colleges & Universities Program and our Transgender Justice Initiative. You’ll play a leading role in shaping our benchmarking tools like the Corporate Equality Index and Healthcare Equality Index. You’ll help advance leadership development opportunities focused on HIV and health equity, empowering global movement leaders and developing youth ambassadors. And you’ll be part of changing the landscape for LGBTQ+ young people and families through programs like All Children-All Families and Welcoming Schools. You’ll be part of innovating how we deliver trainings and provide tools to help the LGBTQ+ community. And you’ll work closely with your colleagues across the organization and a research team to ensure the experiences and needs of the LGBTQ+ are understood by the public.
