Our lab employs patient-specific and mutation-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models of cardiac myocytes and associated cell-types for disease modeling. These projects involve functional characterization of human heart cells and cardiac-organoids derived from stem cells, gene expression perturbations, and epigenetic signatures to determine the pathogenic mechanism of genetic disease. Focus is on uncovering novel markers that predict heart disease and identification of biological processes that mat be amenable to novel drug therapy. Ongoing studies are focused on heart disease associated with pathogenic mutations in LMNA (laminopathies) and FXN (Friedrich's Ataxia).

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop projects together with the Principle Investigator (Dr. McDonald). The postdoc is expected to demonstrate independence in the design, oversight of junior trainees, and implementation of the daily activities required for the conduct of the research program with guidance from the Principle Investigator (PI).
