Position Highlights Researcher/Scientist IV positions are available in the Department of Translational Neurosciences at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. The successful candidates will conduct cancer research and develop drug screening assays and identify targeted-therapeutic drugs to treat cancer and neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. Cell-based screening techniques include those for substrate analog inhibitors, protein interaction disruption, and targeted protein degradation. Cancer research will involve conducting and supervising research on neuroendocrine cancers with novel animal models, developing diagnostic biomarker detection reagents, and studying mechanisms of tumorigenesis using advanced and multidisciplinary approaches.

Successful applicants should have strong molecular and cellular expertise, and skill in tissue culture, plasmid design, stable cell line generation, biosensor reporter systems, protein biochemistry and purification, microscopy, spectrofluorimetry, flow cytometry, and pharmacology are desired.

Experience with animal modeling of disease, viral vector design, high throughput screening, molecular modeling, medicinal chemistry, and/or multiomic analyses are also areas of interest.

Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team within the setting of an outstanding new facility. The position is part of well-funded research program, and will provide the opportunity to produce high impact publications and establish a record of grant award funding. Enthusiastic applicants with adipate experience to conduct relatively independent research translating identification of disease mechanism to clinically applicable treatment approaches consistent with pharmaceutical and biotechnology development are encouraged to apply.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct advanced, multi-disciplinary research, serving as senior collaborator on highly complex research initiatives, leading substantive aspects of the project.
  • Develop cell-based drug screens to identify compounds to be tested in animal models of disease.  
    Formulate research methods and develop research criteria.
  • Collaborate with other scientists in drug screens and validate lead compounds in vitro and in vivo.
  • Foster collaborations within the lab, Department, with other units across the University, and with team members at other institutes worldwide.
  • Compile data and generate computerized statistical data for analytical purposes using software packages, make advanced analyses, and interpret the data.
  • Derive, analyze, and format data for publications, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Maintain detailed records of studies conducted, organize data, prepare data for computer input ,and record computer output. 
  • Maintain biosafety protocols and adherence.
  • Participate in acquiring research funding, including initiating and writing grant proposals, generating preliminary data, submitting grant applications, and preparing progress reports.
  • Participate or author articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, or chapter publications. 
  • Co-author or author publications and co-present results with principal investigators at meetings and conferences.
  • Contribute to ensuring regulatory compliance of the research program by coordinating with granting agencies and regulators as required by research program.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of study and may supervise other research and support personnel.
  • Train students and staff in the operation of equipment and/or in the performance of technical procedures, and provide mentorship for students in the laboratory.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Postdoctoral Associates, Graduate Assistants, and Designated Campus Colleagues.
  • Oversee inventory and requisition supplies.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation.
  • Ability to conduct research independently and within a team.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of grant writing and manuscript preparation.
  • Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD  in Cellular or Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or related field of study required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications● Expertise in plasmid design, stablely transfected cell line generation, biosensor and reporter assay development.
● Expertise in protein biochemistry, pharmacology, high throughput screening, and/or cell and molecular biology.
● Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals.
