Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Graduate Assistant for the Tutorial Program will support tutoring scheduling, coordinating weekly, bi-weekly and monthly tutorial data reports. The Graduate Assistant for review sessions will be required to attend in-person monthly tutor training, support tutors in completing National Tutoring Association Certification, and contribute to the OMSE newsletter as well as interact with UMD’s faculty and staff to foster enhanced visibility of OMSE’s services and programs throughout the university.

Tutoring scheduling duties include tracking tutoring requests, matching students with tutors and review groups, and ensuring that all relevant parties are notified of tutoring matching. Collecting information from tutors, and following up with tutors regarding their study sessions and scheduled hours. The Graduate Assistant for the Tutorial Review Program will facilitate study sessions based on need, up to 6 hours per week, promote, and oversee the coordination of all departmental review sessions.

Data collection, visualization, analysis and assessment will be required to be submitted on a weekly basis to the Tutoring supervisor. Using the data, candidates must make recommendations based on demand (hiring requests, increasing study sessions, etc.)

The Graduate Assistant for the Tutorial Program will also serve as a member of the OMSE/NTA Tutorial Advisory Committee along with the Tutoring Graduate Coordinator and Assistant Director. In keeping with OMSE’s collaborative approach to work, the Graduate Assistant for the Tutorial Program’s review sessions will also assist with OMSE’s signature annual programs when needed.

The Tutoring coordinator will work closely with the Graduate Assistants for the Tutoring Program to assess other needs of the program as they arise, as well as any additional related duties as assigned.

Key duties include:
  • Organizing and attending weekly and monthly tutoring and OMSE meetings.
  • Facilitating Tutoring orientation at the start of each semester.
  • Tutoring Data Reporting on a weekly and bi-weekly basis.
  • Analyzing tutoring data and providing recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Coordinating tutoring sessions via email and phone; matching tutors and tutees in a timely manner.
  • Monitoring tutoring attendance, and contacting tutors to ensure that sessions are attended.
  • Providing technical support to tutors and students.
  • Maintaining a learning management system via ELMS.
  • Coordinating tutorial services across OMSE programs in collaboration with fellow GAs and senior staff virtually and in person.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Registered graduate student in a University of Maryland, College Park program.

Experience:
Experience working with multi-ethnic students from diverse backgrounds and varied developmental levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, detail-oriented and strong time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and problem-solve when technical and data issues that may arise.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office (MS Word and MS Excel), Zoom, ELMS, Google Suite (Docs, Drive, Gmail, Google Cal).
  •  Knowledge of using Canva, photoshop, or similar publishing/design software for creating and marketing materials. Demonstrate the ability to be innovative in marketing strategies.

This position requires availability for approximately 10 hours of work per week, between 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. M-F; Providing coverage and assist with OMSE’s annual events (some weekend coverage may be required). Candidates must also be able to work in-person at the OMSE Office on campus.

Preferences:

  • Continuity for 2+ years in the position is desirable, but not required.
  • Ability to assume a leadership role with strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Additional Information:

  • This is a 10-hours per-week, 12-month graduate assistantship.
  • Attend OMSE’s Orientation, Team, 1:1 and GA Meetings.
  • Provide coverage and assist with OMSE’s annual events.
  • Occasional weekend coverage is required.
