Postdoctoral Associate - Mechanical Engineering
Job Description
In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in sophisticated manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Beuth Lab in MechE. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by running neurophysiology experiments, analyzing data, and writing papers. You will perform research on topics in the broad area of metals additive manufacturing, with an emphasis on process monitoring and control and process modeling. You will contribute to the satisfaction of project sponsor requirements, including timely submission of reports and data sharing.
Beuth’s modeling research in additive manufacturing has led to the development of “process map” approaches for mapping out the role of principal process variables on process characteristics such as melt pool geometry, microstructure, and residual stress. By characterizing AM processes over their full process variable range, Beuth’s research is allowing unique insights into process control, expansion of process operating ranges, and unique comparisons of AM processes operating in very different regions of processing space.
Core responsibilities include:
Performing additive manufacturing fundamental research.
Performing simulations and experiments in additive manufacturing of metals.
Writing reports and papers summarizing research approaches and results.
Giving presentations to internal and external research groups, including presentations at technical conferences.
Interacting with project sponsor representatives via electronic means or in person.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in the area of Additive Manufacturing is required
Research assistant at the graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) level required.
Fundamental research in the area of metals additive manufacturing is required.
Research experience in the area of process monitoring and process modeling is preferred.
Must be able to direct and organize Ph.D., M.S. and undergraduate students in the faculty advisor’s research group
