Position Summary | A position is available for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Plant Developmental Biology working on a USDA-supported project in the Department of Biological Sciences and the BioDiscovery Institute at the University of North Texas. The project aims to understand the genetic regulation inherent in the formation of stratified vascular tissues and phloem cap fibers (i.e., bast fibers) in the stems of Malvaceae plants, using cotton (Gossypium spp) as a model system. In addition to studying the basic science of cellular differentiation in woody stems, an applied goal of the project is to improve a value-added co-product in an agriculturally important crop. The successful candidate will be skilled in molecular biology and plant development, and will have experience with transcriptomics. Skills in histology, including fixation and sectioning of plant tissues, and microscopy will be particularly beneficial to the project, as will be the ability to troubleshoot problems as they arise. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and will work collaboratively with graduate students and senior personnel on all aspects of the project, including training students and preparing manuscripts and presentations. The project will be conducted in the shared laboratories of Drs. Brian Ayre and Roisin McGarry. The Department of Biological Sciences and the BioDiscovery Institute at the University of North Texas are equipped with modern facilities for all aspects of the research and have a strong community of plant-oriented research groups in biochemistry and molecular biology for a stimulating intellectual environment. |
