Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

About the Position: As a part of the Career Education & Exposure unit in the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, the Program Manager will meet with students and early-stage alumni individually and in groups to discuss career development topics, support the creation and enhancement of core career education resources for students of all majors and academic backgrounds, and lead two major initiatives in the Center: Intern for a Day and the Peer Career Educator (PCE) program.

Career Advising & Career Education:
  • Conduct approximately 8-10 hours of individual career advising appointments weekly with undergraduate students of all majors, master’s students, and early-stage alumni on relevant career development topics, including choosing a career path, job & internship search strategies, networking guidance, interviewing assistance, reviews of application materials, insight on applying to graduate school, and more.
  • Conduct in-person, virtual, and hybrid presentations to small and large classrooms of varied majors and student organizations on a variety of career development topics.
  • Coordinate and conduct Center-wide workshops and programs.
  • Create, curate, and update career-related videos and written content for the University Career Center website, self-paced online modules, downloadable classroom assignments for UMD faculty and instructors, and other outlets (e-newsletters, social media, etc).


Intern for a Day Program Management:
  • Manage the planning and implementation of the Center’s career exposure program, Intern for a Day, historically serving 600+ students and 300+ professionals annually through in-person job shadowing and virtual informational interviews.
  • Effectively assess the student and host experience of the program and coordinate enhancements to the program as needed.
  • Evaluate industries in high-demand from UMD undergraduate population and connect with campus partners to intentionally recruit alumni, employers, parents, and others in those industries to serve as hosts.

Peer Career Educator (PCE) Oversight, Supervision & Development:
  • Effectively hire, train, and supervise 4-8+ undergraduate Peer Career Educators on career preparation topics to support undergraduate students of all majors in direct service during Center’s weekday drop-in hours.
  • Enhance the confidence, professional development, and service offerings of PCEs through intentional training sessions, scheduled one-on-ones and group meetings, and planned opportunities for shadowing and facilitating classroom and student organization presentations.
  • Manage the work schedule of PCE drop-in hour coverage for the University Career Center.

Liaison to Student Support Partner Units:
  • Serve as a liaison to living-learning programs, the Office of Letters & Sciences, and other identified student support partner units throughout campus.
  • Notify liaison areas of relevant upcoming Center events and programs, embed career-related content and assignments into applicable classrooms and online spaces, and serve as the first point of contact for other classroom and departmental presentation requests.
  • Support and actively participate in Center-wide events, such as career fairs and staff meetings.
  • Serve on Center-wide and Division-wide committees as needed.
  • Participate in other general administration and project-based support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and
Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of related experience in career advising, experiential learning, college student personnel, or other relevant field. A Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, education, or other related discipline can be substituted for the three (3) years of work experience.
  • Experience creating and delivering effective presentations to large and small groups.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills to effectively work and interact with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Efficient project management skills and demonstrated ability to multitask with high attention to detail.
  • Comfort with technology and computer programs, including virtual meeting tools.

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, education, or other related discipline.
  • Experience in designing and implementing innovative programs.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic and possessing a positive approach to work.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability and desire to think creatively and reimagine what has been; value the opportunity to expand and maximize.

Additional Information:

Compensation:
  • Mid to upper $60’s
