The Opportunity

The School of Public Administration in the College of Community Innovation and Education at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure earning instructor or lecturer position, anticipated to begin Fall 2024. This is a full-time faculty position at the UCF Downtown Campus (on site).

The selected candidate will contribute to the School of Public Administration mission by teaching courses in the highly nationally ranked (#2) emergency management programs. The expected teaching load is 4 courses per semester (spring and fall) at both undergraduate and master’s levels. Potential courses to teach include Hazard Mitigation and Preparedness, Disaster Response and Recovery, Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and Intergovernmental Administration at the undergraduate level; and Foundations of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Cross-Sectoral Governance, Managing Emergencies and Crises, Public Sector Communications, and Leadership in Public Service at the master’s level. The teaching mode can be in-person, online, or mixed-mode.

The candidate will also be involved in educational and other service for the school, college, and university as well as the profession and community. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and proficient in emergency and crisis management theories, policies, and practices in the U.S. and internationally. The candidate is expected to be active in local, regional, and national emergency management or related organizations.

The highly ranked School of Public Administration offers NASPAA accredited Master of Public Administration and Master of Nonprofit Management (first accredited nonprofit program in the world by NASPAA) programs, a PAB accredited Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning, a Master of Emergency and Crisis Management, a Master of Public Policy, a Master of Research Administration, a Ph.D. in Public Affairs, undergraduate public administration, nonprofit management, and emergency management degrees, a first of its kind international dual degree in Public Administration/Nonprofit Management, and graduate and undergraduate certificate program and minors (Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Social Justice, and Urban and Regional Planning). The School of Public Administration has one of the largest PA programs in the Southeast with active partnerships with state and local government and community nonprofit agencies. The School of Public Administration is housed in the College of Community Innovation and Education and is located in the state-of-the art facility with access to fully equipped multimedia classrooms at the UCF Downtown Orlando campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

By time of appointment, the successful candidate must hold a master’s degree (for instructor) or a Ph.D. (for lecturer) in emergency management, homeland security, public administration, public policy, or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of emergency management, homeland security, law enforcement, the military, fire service, Emergency Medical Services, and related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of teaching experience - in person and/or virtual environments - in higher education.

  • Evidence of program development (e.g., community programs, teaching training, community engagement).

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the emergency management and homeland security profession.

  • Mentoring or supervising experience with students through professional opportunities (e.g., trainings, internships, conferences, professional associations, community-engaged research).

  • Relevant emergency management certification(s).
