The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center (the CPC Center) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that drives progressive ideas into the debate, supports greater cohesion across the progressive movement, generates the momentum we need to advance racial, economic and gender justice, and builds progressive power across America. The CPC Center works to bring together community leaders, organizers, advocates, unions and policy experts to build people-led cutting edge policy, message guidance, and strategy to drive progressive ideas and reforms into the public debate and advance progressive ideals and values.

Position Description

The CPC Center is recruiting a Foundation Relations and Donor Communications Manager to oversee engagements in the philanthropic sector to develop and deepen relationships with foundation donors and prospects with the aim of increasing philanthropic support, as well as to strengthen communications with donors and potential donors.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Foundation Relations and Donor Communications Manager will be principally tasked with the following duties and responsibilities:

Foundation Relations and Grantseeking

  • With the Executive Director and Development Associate, develop, implement and evaluate annual revenue plans that focuses on maintaining, expanding and enhancing institutional partnerships, special projects, and capital support, when applicable.

  • Develop detailed proposals and reports for CPC Center 501(c)(3) foundation funders and prospects across the Center’s program areas in collaboration with the Executive Director

  • Develop issue-specific program overviews, work plans, grant proposals, and related budgets in collaboration with the Executive Director and, where appropriate, the Development Associate, Chief Operating Officer and Program Directors

  • Conduct prospect research using online tools and networks to identify potential new foundation funding sources for the CPC Center

  • Engage in grant stewardship, cultivation, and regular communications with foundation staff and Directors, in coordination with the Executive Director

  • Prepare leadership team and other key program staff for meetings with foundation donors and prospects, participating as appropriate; draft briefing memos for funder meetings, as needed

  • Directly manage a portfolio of foundation funders, including setting meetings, calls, and tracking cultivation and solicitation engagements and opportunities

  • Maintain and track all pertinent foundation outreach—including cultivations, solicitations, reporting deadlines, and other activities—in CRM systems

  • Track program activities and expenses in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, and program staff for required reporting.

  • Monitoring the Center’s annual and longer-term revenue plans and annual budget as they relate to foundation support

  • Where appropriate, develop proposal narratives and budgets for other funders, including individual donors, organizations and others

Donor Communications

  • Draft and oversee the production of emails, presentations, acknowledgment letters, briefing materials and other communications for individual and foundation donors and prospects.

  • Draft and edit strategy documents, goals, agendas, and other collateral materials as needed, and provide leadership in the preparation of all background/briefing materials

  • Draft and edit marketing materials for annual fund campaigns, email and web appeals, and online engagement with donors and prospects.

  • With the Communications Director and Development Associate, supervise and execute donor-oriented email and social media (Facebook ads, etc.) campaigns to engage individual advocates and activists online to spur greater engagement and giving opportunities, with outside vendors as appropriate

Development Operations

  • Track and maintain all foundation and individual engagements and online donor interactions in an integrated CRM

  • With Development Associate and Communications Director, oversee IT vendors to ensure that databases and other tools (prospect research, email marketing, etc.) are being properly implemented to track donor and prospect interactions, schedule future engagement, and adhere to best practices in donor privacy and data hygiene

Other duties as assigned

Key Relationships

This position will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the Development Associate, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Communications.


The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:

General Requirements

  • At least 5-7 years’ experience in nonprofit or political fundraising

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Passion for the mission of the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center and the progressive movement

  • Outstanding time management and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-faceted projects and perform well independently with grace under pressure in a small organization with a fast-paced, multitasking environment

  • Ability to work on tight deadlines, adapt to changing situations, and handle confidential information

  • Willingness to pitch in where needed

  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment

  • Demonstrated flexibility and openness in responding to changing work priorities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint. Experience with NGP VAN, Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or another donor management system a plus

  • Exceptional ability to set up and maintain solid systems

  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule when required, including some weekend, early morning, and evening commitments

Foundation Relations and Grantseeking

  • 3 years of progressively responsible development experience, including significant experience in writing foundation grant proposals and reports, preferably at a national advocacy organization

  • Demonstrated ability to write in compelling language about the Center’s work and to prepare complex proposals, reports and related materials

  • Proven track record in building and maintaining successful relationships with foundations

  • Superior skills and attention to detail on grant application, reporting, cultivation, and data management responsibilities

Donor Communications

  • Superior written communications skills with success in email and postal appeals, social media, and web communications, focused on engaging and motivating potential donors

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and engage diverse audiences and build long-term relationships to achieve fundraising success

  • Familiarity with email marketing and web/social media marketing best practices in a non-profit or advocacy environment

Development Operations

  • Working knowledge of constituent relationship management and prospect research tools required; please provide detail on CRMs and other data tools with which you are familiar

  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information regarding CPC Center’s sensitive donor information Skills in overseeing fundraising vendors (CRM, prospect research, etc.) not required but appreciated

Salary Range

$65,000-$95,000 (based on experience and level of independence)
