We're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. We believe in the potential of our people and you’ll develop beyond what you thought possible

We need great people who share our passion for science and have the drive and determination to meet the unmet needs of patients around the world. If you’re curious about what science can do, then you’re our kind of person. We do everything we can to make sure each AstraZeneca person has everything they need to stretch themselves and see what they can achieve.

As the Director of R&D Science Engagement, you will work closely with Oncology R&D Leadership and Corporate Affairs teams to support local and regional partnerships, US STEM programming, and build and maintain AstraZeneca’s reputation. The focus of this role will be aligned to global R&D.

Your main responsibilities will be to:

  • represent AstraZeneca and its strategic interests in the many public, private and institutional groups that support the biotechnology community in the BioHealth Capital Region

  • take responsibility for the development and delivery of harmonized strategy and execution of our integrated US STEM program, including partnerships, curriculum development, events, and digital programming

  • ensure appropriate external engagement to enhance and protect our scientific reputation

This role will require an individual with a deep understanding of regional biotech/ pharma networks (with priority focus on the BioHealth Capital Region) and the ability to develop and deliver STEM curricula, project plans, and associated communications plan effectively.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement AstraZeneca’s Gaithersburg-focused ecosystem acceleration strategy for the BioHealth Capital Region, including ability to engage and lead internal and external resources in demonstrating AstraZeneca’s advantages to external partners such as academic institutions, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Requirements include Board participation in key regional industrial / academic / institutional groups and ability to effect outcomes directly and via partnerships with various groups.

  • Ability to engage productively at the level of state Governors and heads of major universities like Johns Hopkins / University of Maryland System as well as leadership at Maryland Tech Council and VABio.

  • Lead the development of our US STEM programming and partnerships, working with the Corporate Affairs teams to align priorities and plans. This includes leadership and implementation of the design and delivery of STEM curricula, including events, media, and digital channel engagements

  • Support a global AZ STEM network, identifying and building strong relationships with AstraZeneca STEM leads across multiple markets and other key leaders to develop a harmonized strategy around STEM programming focused on our three TAs, engineering, and IT

  • Ensure internal and external measurement, insights, and strategic development against R&D scientific reputation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline is required; PhD/MSc preferred.

  • 10+ years working in biopharma is required (ideally across multiple functions such as commercial or R&D), as well as experience on corporate / institutional boards.

  • Specific work helping communities / professional ecosystems to grow is appreciated, as is a strong sense of corporate strategy.

  • Comfort with presentations to very senior groups required.

  • Will need to be a strategic thinker with the ability to develop STEM curricula, project plans and execute communications effectively.

  • Expert-level learning and development skills to support numerous projects, deliver against tight deadlines, coordinate with multiple functions and/or regions and successfully partner with internal clients and leaders.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as high emotional intelligence

  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex internal and external stakeholders

  • Be an expert at shaping the agenda of public, private and institutional groups via indirect authority (i.e., board seats).

  • The successful candidate is adept at working independently, often with ambiguity, but always with a strong sense of purpose.
