Residence Hall Director – Male Residence Halls

Typical Schedule: This is a 12 month, live-in position beginning July 1, 2020.

Purpose: A Hall Director position at Holy Cross College serves as the community leader for the male residential communities, consisting of 4 residence halls with about 150 total residents, within the Division of Student Life. The Hall Director is responsible for working closely with other Residence Life and Housing staff members and students to develop and maintain an atmosphere that promotes academic, personal, and social growth.  As an employee of the Residence Life & Housing Department, each Hall Director will administer and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Hall Director Manual, Residence Life Contract, and the Holy Cross College Student Code of Conduct.  Hall Directors additionally provide a welcoming and positive atmosphere through programming in the residence halls and a ministry of presence.  The responsibilities listed will be carried out under the supervision of the Director of Residence Life & Housing.  A commitment to open communication and regular contact with the residents and Residence Life Staff members is crucial to building a proactive residence hall program which helps to promote an environment that supports the mission of the College. The Hall Director position can be categorized in four main areas:

Essential Job Duties

  • All administrators, faculty and staff are called to assist students in their formation to be Christ-like students and thus must embrace and advance the Holy Cross mission of the College in all professional activities.

Chief Administrator

  • Attend regular meetings for ongoing supervision developmental opportunities

  • Collaborate with Director of Residence Life & Housing to accomplish essential administrative tasks

  • Assist with the recruitment, training and development of the RA staff

  • Facilitate in the annual Hall Staff Orientation and Trainings

  • Coach, mentor and supervise Hall Staff

  • Serve in a rotation with other Hall Director as the Hall Director On-Call for entire campus

  • Enforce policies and procedures for the residential community

  • Oversee stewardship of finances for respective residential communities

  • Collaborate on repair/maintenance of the facility

  • Coordinate all communication, with supervisor, supervisees and residents

  • Assist housing director with hall openings, room selection, meal plan management, and hall closing

  • Assist and collaborate with student activity coordinator and director of campus ministry on residential programming

Community Builder

  • Provide opportunities for Hall Staff team bonding/relationship building

  • Conduct hall meetings (opening, closing, and as needed)

  • Challenge and support resident assistants in their efforts to build community through residential interaction and programming

  • Create opportunities to interact informally on a regular basis with residents

  • Know all residents by name

  • Reach out in intentional ways to students disconnected from the community

  • Create opportunities to highlight and celebrate the diversity of the residents

  • Support the development of signature events unique to each community

  • Attend community programs and College events in which residents participate

Pastoral Leader

  • Serve as an active and visible witness of a committed Christian

  • Promote opportunities for vibrant Catholic worship

  • Collaborate with College partners to design opportunities to integrate faith

  • Establish a “ministry of presence”

  • Reach out to residents, especially marginalized or vulnerable students

  • Meet one-on-one with all first year students during the first semester and continue those relationships

  • Mediate conflict resolution among residents and with parents

  • Provide pastoral care and counseling

  • Employ crisis management with students of concern

  • Implement discipline consistent with College Student Handbook and document

College Resource

  • Serve as the liaison for faculty, staff and parents

  • Acquire and enhance understanding of College structure and resources

  • Communicate information and make referrals for residents as needed

  • Collaborate with Student Affairs departments and critical College partners

  • Share information with the Deputy Title IX Coordinator and CARE Team as needed

  • Serve as a member of annual task groups, on College committee, or advise College clubs or organizations

  • Serve as a presenter during summer Saints Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) days

Day to Day Responsibilities

While each day may vary greatly in this role where a Hall Director is working daily with college students, the following are some of the expectations that can be expected:

  • Weekly staff meetings with the Director of Residence Life & Housing and the other Hall Director

  • Bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the Director of Residence Life & Housing

  • Weekly staff meetings with the resident assistant staff the Hall Director supervises

  • Bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with each individual Resident Assistant the Hall Director supervises

  • Monthly Development Meeting with entire Hall Staff (Director, Hall Director, Resident Assistants)

  • 15-20 Office Hours per week, to promote availability to residents.

  • Conduct meetings as necessary

  • Bi-Weekly Student Life Team Meetings, with Senior Vice President and other members of Student Life

  • On-Call responsibilities for all of campus two weeknights a week and every other weekend (Fri-Sun)

Minimum Education, Skills, and Ability

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with adolescent or college age students in a residential setting preferred

  • Understanding of the structure, mission, and values of institutions of Catholic higher education

  • A commitment to the concepts of community and the integration of mind, body, and spirit within the context of the Congregation of Holy Cross and the mission of Holy Cross College

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in higher education with faculty, staff and students

  • Effective interpersonal skills, including a willingness to create a welcoming environment for all people

  • Ability to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with urgent or immediate demands

  • Capacity to manage stress and maintain personal and emotional stability in a demanding work environment

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with a facility for public speaking

  • Strong organizational skills, with a demonstrated attention to detail

  • Competent with technology (MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn new systems
