Wheaton College invites applications for two (2) post-doctoral to tenure-track teaching fellows in medical humanities. The post-doctoral fellow will hold two-year position and, based on excellent performance may be considered for a tenure track position immediately following the post-doctoral fellowship.

Post-doctoral fellows will offer their specialized knowledge and invigorate Wheaton College’s course offerings in global narrative medicine and digital health humanities, broadly conceived. During their tenure post-doctoral fellows will support the development of a web-based open-source teaching and learning resource.

Post-doctoral fellows will contribute three courses per year collaborate on a multi-scholar teaching and learning initiative and have lead responsibility for the development of two new courses during their two-year tenure. The work of post-doctoral fellows will take place under the general direction of a designated department chair and the PI of the Mellon Grant. The postdoctoral fellow will be supported by a robust mentoring and onboarding environment that will include cohort and vertical mentoring for new faculty. Post-doctoral fellows will be included in the New Faculty Seminar which onboards new tenure track and professors of practice.

We seek humanities scholars whose research interests on race are developed through the study of ethnography of biomedicine; health inequities in medical communication; the relationship between medicine and media; algorithmic health disparities; global narrative medicine; and/or transnational narratives of illness and healthcare.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Requires a minimum of a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a humanities discipline.
  • Scholarship focus on the intersections of race and medicine.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching medical humanities or related courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate student teaching and mentoring.
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills. The candidate who fills this position will become an integral part of the community of teacher-scholars dedicated to building a medical humanities curriculum at Wheaton College.
