Department Description

 

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit which conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where non human primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to its missions of teaching and service.

 

Job Summary

Under supervision, provide technical, scientific, and organizational assistance in conducting multi-disciplinary research in the Respiratory Diseases Unit, located within the California National Primate Research Center. Coordinate laboratory activities and provide support including technical, scientific, and organizational assistance to the operation of the laboratory research activities. Provide administrative and technical support including coordinating data collection and analysis; overseeing processing and storage of cell and tissue samples, sectioning of tissues; performing a variety of basic to multi-complex assays; and conducting laboratory-based procedures according to established protocols. Assist in the training and serve as the team leader for the laboratory with daily responsibilities in assigning work to of laboratory assistants, students and graduate/postdoctoral students. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in good working order. Perform molecular assays and ELISAs. Ensure that UC, Campus, and Primate Center guidelines are followed in performing all tasks. Interact with the PI and onsite and off-site collaborators.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

·         Position requires repeated movement, repetitive procedures, operating and maintaining equipment, and safely lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.

·         Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shields, and head covers.

·         Use and disposal of radioactive isotope, hazardous materials and other environmental health and safety procedures.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·         Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

·         Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.

·         Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1, 2, or 3 facilities where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus. Wear protective clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.

·         Work occasional overtime, weekends and holidays.

·         California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·         Bachelor’s Degree Biological Sciences or related discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology and/or immunology.

·         Experience in conducting laboratory experiments using a variety ofcell culture methodologies and experience with immune-based assays.

·         Experience maintaining inventory control and laboratory records as well as experience with medical waste disposal and shipping regulations.

·         Experience using standard laboratory equipment in molecular biology and immunology research, which includes using pipettes, centrifuge, use of a biological safety cabinet, and

experience preparing reagents, buffer and other common solutions used in laboratory settings.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         General knowledge and experience in applied immunology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and biochemistry.

·         Skills in sterile techniques to prepare media and reagents.

·         Familiarity with computer programs for word processing, graphing, and data storage. Skills to perform literature reviews.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:            

·         Experience with research project management principles and practices including creating project summaries/reports, research data, collection/publication development, and laboratory protocols/SOPs.

·         Experience in the collection, analysis, and summarizing research data/results in tabular and graph form to report laboratory data and results clearly and succinctly.

·         Experience with applied safety training to work with hazardous materials and environmental health and safety procedures.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Effective interpersonal and communication skills to efficiently communicate and coordinate day-to-day activities in the laboratory working with diverse groups of academic staff, students, and other staff using tact, and diplomacy.

·         Writing, editing and proofreading to effectively document experimental protocols and results.

·         Ability to be a team leader with skills to train and coordinate work assignments of lab personnel.
