Position Description:

Research is a primary mission of the University of Iowa College of Nursing. The Associate Dean is responsible for providing visionary administrative leadership in advancing the collegiate research and scholarly activities in a dynamic, well-resourced and research intensive College and University. The College has strong interprofessional research collaborations and supports with the Institute for Clinical and Translation Science recently receiving refunding with a seven year $28 million award, the Office of the Vice President for Research and other prestigious funded research centers across campus.


The primary responsibility is to facilitate faculty research and scholarship efforts, with particular emphasis on expanding the extramural funding base and the development of faculty. The role encompasses enhancing the research environment within the College, facilitation of faculty and graduate student and postdoctoral fellow research and scholarship, articulation with University and external agencies, and administration of collegiate research resources. The Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship is a member of the leadership team and the position is a full-time, fiscal (twelve-month) tenured faculty position with a distribution of effort across administration, teaching, research and service.

Functions and Responsibilities


Enhancing the Research Environment in the College



  • Cultivates research socialization of faculty, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students through offerings such as research forums, journal clubs, grant workshops, and research interest groups.

  • Oversees training and development opportunities to achieve the research strategic plan for the College.

  • Monitors and promotes the work of the Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence, the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness, the Center for Advancing Multimorbidity Science and any future Centers within the College of Nursing.

  • Maintains and extends a network of research collaborators and resources to foster interdisciplinary and interprofessional team science, locally, nationally, and internationally.


Facilitate Faculty Research and Scholarship



  • Facilitates innovative research and scholarship through visionary leadership and creative use of resources to achieve the College of Nursing mission and goals.

  • Identifies high priority national research and research training needs (e.g. social determinants of health integration); communicates this information to appropriate faculty and staff; and assists with the development of proposals responding to these needs.

  • Facilitates faculty in obtaining intramural and extramural funding for faculty research and programmatic initiatives (e.g. HRSA, Centers).

  • Provides research mentoring for faculty and research socialization of new faculty, in conjunction with the Research Mentoring Team (i.e. Director of the Office for Nursing Research, Division Heads, Senior Faculty as designated).

  • Contributes information on research and scholarship for annual performance reviews of tenure track and clinical track faculty.

  • Facilitates the development of collaborative initiatives between tenure track and clinical track faculty and with interdisciplinary colleagues and external constituencies.

  • Collaborates with the Deans for Undergraduate and Graduate Practice Programs in developing clinical and/or instructional track faculty members’ scholarship, as appropriate.


Facilitate Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Research and Scholarship



  • Collaborates with faculty and the Director of the PhD program to foster development of individual (e.g. F31, TL1) and program (e.g.T32) grant submissions to support research and scholarship of PhD students.

  • Supports PhD students in applications to secure funding to support their research training (e.g. F31).

  • Facilitates recruitment and training of postdoctoral fellows in research training programs.


Collaborate with University and External Agencies



  • Collaborates with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Office of Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice to provide a centralized resource for research development and procurement of external funding.

  • Serves as the principal liaison with research-related University offices and committees, including the Vice-President for Research, Graduate College, IRB Committees, Research Centers, UIHC Nursing Research Committee, University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS-UI’s CTSA), and Scientific Review panels.

  • Represents the College in other functions as requested by the Dean.


Administer Collegiate Research Resources



  • Provides administrative leadership for the operation of the Office for Nursing Research and Scholarship, managing and developing resources for research and research training.

  • Supervises the collection of institutional research related data and the generation of reports.

  • Oversees individual and collective integrity and compliance with grant submission and completion requirements.


Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation, including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment, and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

Education Requirement:

Earned PhD in nursing or in a related field

Required Qualifications:

Eligible for appointment as tenured associate professor



  • Robust record of success in research and scholarship including external funding

  • Record of teaching excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate education


Evidence of mentorship of others to successful outcomes


Demonstrated ability to foster belonging and inclusion.


If a nurse, must be eligible for or possess an RN license in Iowa


If a nurse, must hold a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing

Desirable Qualifications:

Academic administrative experience with strong management and leadership skills


Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead collaborative, interdisciplinary groups


Eligibility for appointment as tenured full professor
