Post-Doctoral Associate

The Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science at the University of Miami has an exciting full time opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Associate.  This position is for up to 2 years (subject to yearly renewal), to work on the vulnerability and resilience of the US to hurricanes with a focus on the role of hurricane forecasts. The position will be based in Miami and hosted by the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Sciences, as well as the Herbert Business School. The expected start date is September 2023. The work will be supervised by Renato Molina (University of Miami) and Ivan Rudik (Cornell University).

The position will support ongoing transdisciplinary efforts to quantify the socio-economic benefits of the forecasting products, the added value in forecast quality contributed by augmented observations, and the identification of costs due to wind and surge exposure.

The ideal candidate will have a background in environmental economics. Being able to adapt and work independently is a must. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Implementation, interpretation, and handling of hurricane forecasting models and data products.

  • Statistical and econometric analysis of observational data.

  • Technical writing and presentation of analyses.

Requirements for the position:

  • PhD in either environmental science, economics, statistics, or related fields.

  • Experience in coding in R, Stata, or Python.

  • Experience conducting interdisciplinary research.

  • Strong econometrics, analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Strong writing skills.

  • Willingness to travel to project meetings and conferences.
