English Prep Instructor (Pre-College English)

Full-Time Tenure Track


DESCRIPTION: Edmonds Community College seeks an innovative educator to develop and teach college preparatory reading and writing courses in the English Prep Department (Pre-College English) in the Pre-College Division. This position will be expected to use research-based methods to improve the success of our students along the pre-college to college-level pathway. Individually and collaboratively, this position will be responsible for developing and evaluating curriculum and assessment instruments.

Faculty contribute to the goals, values and college governance via department and division work; committee assignments; student advising; professional development and college in-service activities (including employee orientation and college compliance trainings); and personal and program evaluation. 

The college seeks faculty who take a leadership role in their departments and the college. This includes adapting to a variety of teaching situations, schedules, and technologies, and working effectively with students, staff, and others in a campus climate committed to cultural diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.

This is a full-time tenure-track position that reports to the Dean of Pre-College Education.

  • Master's degree in Adult Education, Education, English, Developmental Reading, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.

  • Successful experience teaching reading and writing to academically underprepared adults in a community college setting or other adult education setting equivalent to at least two full-time academic years.

  • Effective English speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.


  • Demonstrated success in designing and delivering pre-college to college-level English instruction to academically underprepared students (16 year olds and above) from diverse backgrounds.

  • Experience in developing on-ramp, contextualized, multi-level, and/or linked courses to accelerate students to and through their college pathways.

  • Evidence of using culturally responsive curriculum and teaching strategies to respond to the affective and academic needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Skills in self-reflection and assessing effectiveness of teaching methods, curriculum/program changes, or other interventions in increasing student engagement and success.  

  • Bilingual/Multilingual

Additional Information


Work is typically performed in a classroom and office and requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. The ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English is essential. Instructors are required to use a computer in the work environment.



The salary will be based on the current faculty salary schedule; placement is based on education and related experience. The current range is $64,726 annually for a 172-day appointment. The college provides an excellent benefits package which includes medical, dental, life insurance, and a retirement plan.
