In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in sophisticated manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Weber Lab in MechE. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or advised research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area and may involve coordinating and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. You will be responsible for running neurophysiology experiments, analyzing data, writing papers and such other tasks that are assigned to you.

The Weber lab combines fundamental neuroscience and engineering research to understand physiological mechanisms underlying sensory perception, feedback control of movement, and neuro-plasticity in sensorimotor systems. Knowledge gained from these studies is being applied to invent new technologies and therapies for improving sensory and motor functions after stroke, spinal cord injury, or limb loss. These principles are also being utilized to develop wearable devices to improve sensory, motor, and cognitive functions in balanced humans.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Setting up and operating instruments for measuring electromyography

  • Setting up and operating instruments for performing neural stimulation

  • Writing and using custom software in Matlab to analyze data

  • Writing summary reports of experiments and analysis in form of primary journal articles

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

  • 3-5 years of experience required

  • Experience in Matlab programming

  • Experience with and working knowledge of electromyography instrumentation and analysis

  • Experience with electrical stimulation of neural tissue

  • Experience designing studies to explore spinal cord neurophysiology
