Waterfront Botanical Gardens (WBG) is a growing nonprofit organization located in the heart of Louisville, KY. Established in 1993, this 501(c) is dedicated to fostering a deeper connection between people and the wonders of nature. Our mission is to create a sustainable future for our community through the beauty of diverse plant collections and the tranquility of our stunning gardens.

Waterfront Botanical Gardens has come a long way since its origins in the 1800s as part of the affluent neighborhood called”The Point.” From historic floods to becoming the Ohio Street Dump in 1937, it has evolved into a thriving oasis in Louisville. In 2009, the garden project took root, and with support from individuals like Helen Harrigan and Emil & Nancy Graeser, it flourished. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience and transformation, offering a green oasis in an urban cityscape. Looking ahead, the garden aims to expand its impact, fostering connections with nature and promoting sustainability, fueled by ongoing community support.

The gardens span over 22 acres, of which, approximately 4 acres is developed. The reclaimed landfill site includes the Graeser Family Education Center, Ellen T. Leslie Botanical Classrooms, Beargrass Creek Pathway, and an array of dedicated garden and gathering spaces. In 2022 WBG hosted approximately 40,000 visitors. With Phase 1 of the Master Plan completed, the new President & CEO will lead the organization, staff, and community into the next phases, which includes a Japanese Garden, Tree Allee, and Overlook.

About the Role:

As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Waterfront Botanical Gardens, you will be at the forefront of our mission, responsible for leading our organization and driving its strategic vision. This is an exciting opportunity to serve as the primary advocate, spokesperson, and representative of WBG, ensuring our continued growth, sustainability, and impact.

We are seeking individuals who feel a strong affinity towards our mission, and possess executive level experience in the non-profit space, with strong capabilities in the areas of fundraising, public relations and executive leadership. Individuals with experience in Horticulture, Education, Non-Profit Management, Community Engagement and/or Public Administration/Policy are strongly encouraged.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Executive Leadership: Lead with inclusivity, transparency, and empowerment, aligning with our mission set forth by the Board of Trustees.
  • Board Governance: Cultivate strong relationships with the Board, keeping them well-informed and facilitating informed decision-making.
  • Development and Fundraising: Collaborate with the Development Director to drive fundraising efforts, expanding relationships with supporters.
  • Financial Management: Ensure the organization’s financial stability and sustainability by managing finances within budget guidelines and legal regulations.
  • External Relations and Communications: Act as the organization’s chief spokesperson, promoting our mission and building interest in philanthropic engagement.
