Under administrative direction, the Information Technology Manager performs work of considerable difficulty in planning, coordinating, and controlling the resources, activities and staff related to information technology and computing support for the school.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates acquisition and operation of technology resources (computers, servers, networks, software, data services). 
  • Works with the administration and researchers to define, adapt, develop, and implement technology, hardware, and software solutions to the research, communications, and security needs of the school. 
  • Directly interfaces with faculty, staff, researchers, students, and administrators regarding ongoing operations, applications, and existing resources. 
  • Manages projects related to applications (networking, software, implementation, security).
  • Communicates and coordinates with university IT staff regarding ongoing operation, application, security, and existing resources. 
  • Coordinates the formulation of the school’s technology plans and polices. 
  • Administers the implementation of projects and the application of policies. 
  • Oversees helpdesk and troubleshooting activities. 
  • Administrative technology related responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or related field AND five years of related experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge in Linux desktop and scripting, and server configurations and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Apache/Nginx as well as Tomcat configuration.
  • Experience in maintaining several in-house, Linux based web applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mac and Windows operating systems.
  • Experience with mathematical and statistical software, such as Matlab, Maple, Mathematica, Rstudio, Jupyter Notebook, nbgrader, and Python.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various databases, such as MySQL, MariaDB, and Postgres.
  • Demonstated knowledge of current and future trends in computing technologies and management practices. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current operating systems and computer architecture with emphasis on networked computing. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the research and administrative functions of area assigned. 
  • Experience in planning for information resources and technology. 
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. 
  • Evidende of effective communication. 

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Ability to work both independently or within a complex structured team.
  • Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks.
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices & policies in selecting methods & techniques for obtaining solutions.

Department Statement

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at ASU is currently home to about 60 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 60 instructional faculty, 5 postdoctoral associates, 190 graduate students, 750 undergraduate student majors, and 20 staff members. The School teaches courses to over 20,000 undergraduate students each academic year. SoMSS recently started a new undergraduate degree program in data science. The School also offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education, as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. SoMSS has a strong interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering.
