Does the opportunity to use your skills to build synthetic scenes, like you'd find in immersive video games, in support of real-world sensor performance studies, conceptual design, and hardware prototyping excite you?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our APL team!

We are seeking a scene modeling engineer to help us construct synthetic scene models using state-of-the-art, physics-based scene generation software. The simulation will integrate with a high-fidelity six degree-of-freedom (6DOF) simulation and a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. Synthetic scenes model the electromagnetic energy from natural and man-made objects collected by weapon seekers and other sensors and are needed to perform end-to-end seeker/sensor analysis and to evaluate advanced signal, image, and video processing algorithm effectiveness including: the extraction of targets from complex background clutter, automatic target recognition (ATR), and terminal homing functions. You’ll be joining a hardworking team of engineers dedicated to studying cutting edge solutions to difficult seeker/sensor related problems. As a Scene Modeler…

Your primary responsibility will be to generate synthetic electro-optical, infrared and radio frequency (EO/IR and RF) scenes using commercial off the shelf, government off the shelf, and APL developed software packages. 
You will also assist seeker and sensor engineers with integrating synthetic scene models into end-to-end seeker/sensor models and HIL laboratories, as a member of seeker/sensor conceptual design and performance analysis teams. These efforts will include the integration of synthetic scene models with several software tools, such as MODTRAN and NV-IPM, and various avionics hardware to analyze and quantify weapon seeker/sensor design and avionics system performance. 
You will perform verification and validation of synthetic background scene models, end-to-end seeker models, and HIL architecture. 
You will develop reports and presentations on synthetic background scene models; background and clutter impact on seeker/sensor performance; and other results/findings. Deliver technical presentations to internal and sponsor audiences.

Have a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering or related technical discipline.
Dream to become an authority in synthetic scene generation and seeker/sensor engineering.
Possess strong MATLAB and C++ programming skills.
Are willing to develop basic Linux and GPU programming capability.
Possess good social and verbal/written communication skills.
Have the ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative team.
Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You are above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…
Have a Master of Science or higher in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering or related technical discipline.
Have worked for 2 or more years generating synthetic EO, IR and/or RF background scene models.
Are knowledgeable with EO, IR or RF seeker/sensor technologies and the physics that underpin them.
Have experience conducting seeker/sensor performance evaluations.
Have experience developing software within the Linux OS environment.
Have GPU programming experience.
