Position Description

Do you love to take on challenging problems? Do you want to make meaningful contributions to the development and analysis of state-of-the-art acoustic systems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a creative team member with interest and experience in underwater acoustic modeling, system development, and system analysis who can contribute and grow as an integral part of our dynamic team. The individual will be expected to develop insight into the impact a complex ocean acoustic environment has on advanced underwater acoustic systems as well as the impact the resulting system performance has on the system’s operational utility. The role provides an opportunity to shape and define future system concepts/architectures as well as incremental advancement of existing systems through judicious application of analytical, numerical, and empirical techniques.  Products and recommendations will inform U.S. Navy programs, thereby assisting with the planning, development, and operation of advanced surveillance and tactical sonar systems. This requires a broad understanding of and appreciation for the underlying physical phenomena, sensor/system technology, signal processing, customer problem space, and their inherent dependencies/relationships. You will join a hardworking team of engineers and scientists with a stellar 20-year track record expanding the state-of-the-art in undersea active, passive, and imaging sonar performance.

As an Acoustic Modeling and System Development Engineer/Scientist you will...

Model and simulate current and future acoustic system performance for U.S. government sponsors, analyzing data from active and passive acoustic systems to make recommendations to inform, refine, and extend acoustic system designs and concepts of employment.
Define architectures and concepts for new passive and active acoustic systems, analyzing trade-offs in system designs, environment, and operations to predict acoustic system performance and guide algorithm string development efforts in our team.
Prepare presentations of your acoustic modeling analyses, system designs, performance predictions, and recommendations to brief team leadership, line leadership, program leadership, and sponsors.

Qualifications:

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

Possess a B.S. or higher in Acoustics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Have relevant experience specific to modeling, system definition, data analysis, and/or performance prediction of acoustic systems.
Have proficiency in MATLAB, FORTRAN, or other software languages that are used for acoustic modeling.
Are able to communicate clearly and concisely to APL staff as well as to external government sponsors, both verbally and in written form.
Are able to obtain a Secret or above security clearance. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

Possess a M.S. or Ph.D. in Acoustics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Have 6 or more years of experience in modeling, system definition, data analysis, and/or performance prediction of acoustic systems for the undersea domain.
Have software development experience in FORTRAN.
