Job Description

OPERATIONS SPECIALIST, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI), to join the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) instrument team and support ACIS operations. ACIS is one of two focal plane instruments on Chandra, providing simultaneous high-resolution imaging and moderate-resolution spectroscopy.  MIT has had a major role in ACIS from conception to delivery and continues to support its successful operation. Responsibilities will include generation of commands to the ACIS instrument, with primary responsibility for the command generation software suite; reviewing and verifying spacecraft command loads to ensure the proper ACIS configuration; monitoring the space radiation environment, safing the ACIS instrument when appropriate, and monitoring the health and safety of the ACIS instrument; and performing other duties as needed.  The position requires close coordination with scientists and technical staff at MKI, at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s Chandra X-ray Center, and at NASA to maximize the scientific return of the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  B.Sc. or equivalent degree in an engineering or science field; two years of experience in astrophysics, aerospace engineering, or programming (may include experience gained as an undergraduate); familiarity with Linux command line and advanced UNIX shell commands and abilities; programming experience with multiple languages; ability to work in a team-based environment across all levels; ability to carry out duties independently, seeking input and advice as appropriate; and attention to detail.  PREFERRED:  familiarity with Perl programming, experience with NASA satellite operations, experience working with X-ray astronomy data, and knowledge of X-ray astronomy instruments.  Job #23168

Occasional night and weekend work will be required.

Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check at MIT.  Will be an affiliate of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory which also requires a satisfactory background investigation by SAO.
