Located in the Pine Hills community of Albany NY, RISSE provides comprehensive, year-round English Language and supportive services to the refugee and immigrant community. RISSE operates Youth Programs, Adult English Literacy/Language Program, civics classes, life skills orientation, job search assistance, and more. Our mission is to equip refugees and recent immigrants to build sustainable, independent lives by offering language and literacy instruction and support with life skills and integration into the United State culture and community.

Position Description: Development Director

The Development Director identifies new funding sources and fundraising opportunities and works with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to oversee fund development and the financial sustainability of RISSE programs. The Development Director also represents RISSE in the broader community and establishes relationships with prospective partners, supporters, donors, and community stakeholder groups.

Reports to: The Executive Director who will at least annually evaluate the candidate’s performance on the basis of the elements of this job description and the personnel policies of RISSE.

Qualifications: The Development Director will have: the equivalent of a Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of successful fundraising experience at a non-profit organization; strong oral and written communication skills; experience with CRM donor management systems, fundraising software and applications, and social media platforms; strong leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: experience fundraising for education and/or human services and/or refugee resettlement and/or immigrant integration programs; experience supervising support staff and volunteers.

Hours and Schedule: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, twelve months per year; exempt.

Illustration of Duties:

  • Fundraising and Donor Cultivation: Works with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to identify and research funding opportunities; develops contacts across a wide range of funding sources including individuals, businesses, private and corporate foundations, faith-based and non-profit organizations, and government agencies; coordinates the implementation of all fundraising activities including donor and online campaigns, legacy gifts, annual giving campaigns, and 2-3 annual fundraising/friendraising events.
  • Grant Writing: Identifies new grant opportunities; oversees the writing and submission of grant proposals to support the financial sustainability of RISSE programs; engages in grant partnerships with other community organizations; collaborates with the Executive Director and program directors to adhere to grant reporting requirements.
  • Community Engagement: Promotes awareness of RISSE, its mission and programs; interprets RISSE services to the wider community to develop relationships with local stakeholders including area colleges, faith communities, and other refugee and immigrant service organizations; represents RISSE in speaking engagements in the community and to potential funders and partners; coordinates the publication of an annual report and e-newsletters; participates in developing social media and web content.
  • Compliance: Assists Executive Director in ensuring the integrity and quality of the programs, including observance of all federal, state, and local regulations; and ensures grant compliance.
  • Training: Maintains personal training currency and attends all training as required for the job and as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Board: Acts as staff liaison to the Fund Development Committee, to coordinate and execute fundraising campaigns and events.
