Assistant Professor, Meteorology and Climate Science (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Atmospheric Science at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to build a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses (particularly in atmospheric and climate dynamics). Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, climate dynamics, physical mechanisms of climate change, numerical modeling of change in extreme weather/climate events, and the dynamics of high impact climate events. This position is part of a strategic initiative to build Iowa State's research strength and degree programs in key areas, including climate science and sustainability. Collaborative and interdisciplinary research will be encouraged.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in Atmospheric Science or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

• Evidence of research and expertise studying climate dynamics.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Record of publication activity.

• Demonstrated potential to establish a successful, externally funded research program that complements existing strengths in the department.

• Demonstrates the potential for collaboration with other faculty and units on campus.

• Demonstrated potential to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in atmospheric dynamics and climate sciences.

• Demonstrated potential to attain excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

• Postdoctoral experience.

Department/Program & College Description: The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences is staffed by 20 faculty and has an operating budget of about $2.5M. The Department has areas of strength in climate and paleoclimate, microscale and mesoscale meteorology, hydrology, solid-earth processes, Quaternary Geology, and geoscience education. Research facilities include state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in stable isotope geochemistry, analogue tectonic modeling, biogeochemistry, and glaciology. Programs in geology, meteorology, and climate science serve a total of ~150 undergraduate majors. About 30 M.S. and Ph.D. students are enrolled in the geology and meteorology graduate programs. Generous support for the Department is provided by an active group of alumni. The Geology Program runs a multi-use, newly renovated field station in northwest Wyoming with a 60-year tradition of providing immersive education for students from across the country.
