Dean - Business & Information Technology Division
Job Description
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
The Dean of the Business and Information Technology Division reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Solutions and is responsible for the assigned division.
The goal of the Dean of Business and Information Technology is to assist the Vice President in implementing the educational mission of the college by:
- Serving as a liaison between executive leadership and full-time and part-time students and faculty in the division,
- Serving as a liaison between the division and the community-including schools, colleges, and business and industry,
- Maintaining efficient operations and fostering morale within the division,
- Engaging in strategic planning and problem solving,
- Understanding and complying with MECC and VCCS policies, procedures and practices, and performing assigned tasks and reporting requested information promptly and accurately.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- A thorough understanding of diversity in student and employee populations and the ability to connect with, include, and consider all student and employee populations in curriculum development and teaching.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders important to the college.
- Understanding and belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
- Ability to create and present ideas and budgets to the college and the community at large.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to develop networking relationships and partnerships.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a discipline or field related to the Division of Business and Information Technology.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching or occupational experience in a field related to the division or educational preparation above Master’s degree at the rate of 30 undergraduate credits being considered equivalent to one year of teaching or occupational experience, and 24 graduate credits being considered equivalent to one year of teaching or occupational experience.
- Experience successfully leading a department in strategic planning, budgeting, and daily operations of employee supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated in the application package.
Six to nine years of total teaching experience in a field applicable to the Division.
Statewide travel is required but infrequent.
