Position Description:
A Post-doctoral Scholar position at the University of Iowa-College of Pharmacy is now available in Ethan Anderson’s laboratory. This NIH-funded project will investigate the glucoregulatory and anti-inflammatory role of prohibitins-1,2 (PHB1/2) in mitochondrial and nuclear compartments, and in the bloodstream. Disease models of interest include sepsis and diabetes. No background in either of these diseases, mitochondrial bioenergetics or metabolomics is required (candidate will be trained), although the successful candidate must have experience using transgenic mouse models, viral-mediated gene delivery and primary cell culture. Additional strengths would include expertise in mass spectrometry, stable isotope (eg,13C) tracing, ‘omics analysis, flow cytometry and single-cell RNA-seq. The University of Iowa has outstanding state-of-the-art core facilities that will augment the candidate’s research capacity and facilitate data collection, while simultaneously broadening their range of scientific expertise.

It is expected that the postdoctoral scholar will work independently in a collaborative environment, while also assisting junior laboratory members with experimental design and execution. This individual should be self-motivated and be capable of study design, collection, and analysis of experimental data, maintaining electronic records, troubleshooting experiments, and training graduate students and research assistants. The scholar will also be responsible for preparing abstracts and manuscripts related to his/her work and strive to obtain their own extramural funding, if possible funding mechanisms exist.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Science & Experimental Therapeutics consists of 20+ faculty members with diverse expertise in pharmacology, PK/PD, pharmacogenomics, experimental pharmaceutics, biomaterials, chemistry and drug delivery. Scientists in the College of Pharmacy work closely with physicians and investigators in the Carver College of Medicine on interdisciplinary projects. Both colleges have an international reputation for excellence in scholarship and research. In addition to those centers described above, numerous other specialized research centers exist within the university. Academic and research programs in the Carver College of Medicine, College of Public Health, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Dentistry provide an outstanding environment for successful collaborations. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a vibrant community located along the Iowa River in southeastern Iowa, offering outstanding schools, quality entertainment, and sports, as well as literary, musical and cultural opportunities. Iowa City is frequently rated highly in various “best-place-to-live ” listings.
