Job Description
Duties: Writing Center Coordinator responsibilities will include development and coordination of all Writing Center activities at all South Plains College locations including recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, and supervision of all Writing Center tutors; specifically:
  • Implementing, overseeing and evaluating all Writing Center activities and operations
  • Assisting the Director of Institutional Effectiveness with implementation and assessment of the Quality Enhancement Plan
  • Assisting with the institutionalization of all Writing Center activities and operations.
  • Implementing innovative delivery systems for tutoring services, especially in courses with heavy reading and writing components at all SPC locations (to include the development, testing, data collection, and reporting) as directed
  • Overseeing equipment, signage, and technology acquisitions for Writing Centers at all SPC locations.
  • Investigating, researching, and recommending data collection processes and reporting procedures for assessing effectiveness of Writing Center support services (to include surveys and measures of learning outcomes, course success, and retention) to evaluate the effectiveness of Writing Center services
  • Collecting data and preparing reports of measures of effectiveness of Writing Center support services with recommendations for improvement
  • Updating and monitoring of the Writing Center web pages/social media to provide and advertise locations/addresses, services offered, appointment information, and writing resources
  • Cultivating a positive and supportive Writing Center profile on and off campus through outreach and operations
  • Obtaining, organizing, and developing Writing Center materials, such as promotional materials, handouts, and online resources/materials
  • Observing tutors on duty to evaluate performance and to recommend changes that could strengthen tutoring skills
  • Maintaining employment records for student staff and supervising online timesheet submissions
  • Communicating on a regular and routine basis (to include onsite visits) with timekeepers, deans, faculty, and staff at all SPC locations
  • Presenting program objectives to faculty, staff, students, and community partners to elicit support
  • Participation in tutor recognition programs/ceremonies (make recommendations to the Teaching and Learning Center to honor Writing Center tutor achievements)
  • Preparing proposals and budgets, and contributing to Teaching and Learning Center program policies and goals and/or assisting in their preparation
  • Conducting and/or participating in workshops, committees, and conferences designed to promote the intellectual, social, and physical well-being of students
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Master’s in English preferred
  • Preferred community college experience
  • Experience in training and supervision of tutors, academic coaches, and mentors
  • Experience in teaching developmental English curriculum or freshman-level composition courses, preferably at community colleges.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in administration and supervision, preferably at a two-year HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • At least 5 years of successful experience working with Hispanic, low-income, and other high-need students
