Dean, Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences

The University of Mary in Bismarck, ND invites applications for the Dean of the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences. The Dean is the chief administrative officer of the School and the leader of its faculty. The primary responsibility is to foster the growth and flourishing of the School through (1) solid, innovative, and student-centered academic programming; (2) a network of fruitful internal and external partnerships; and (3) energetic enrollment efforts for delivery of education in all modalities (traditional, online, blended, life-long learning). Other key responsibilities include overseeing instructional efforts; implementing the educational and professional objectives of the School;  working with faculty, staff, and students in a spirit of collegiality and creativity to develop quality teaching, scholarly research, and public service programs. (S)he receives support from and collaborates with the Office of Enrollment Management for student recruitment responsibilities and with the Office of Mission Advancement for fundraising responsibilities. The Dean shares the academic responsibilities and privileges of the full-time faculty.

The Dean of the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences assumes special responsibility for the School's unique mission to prepare health care professionals, anchored in moral courage, who respect and defend the dignity of the human person.

Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Creates, facilitates, and leads the development of the academic programs of the School with attention to the implementation of the academic program development, accreditation, and assessment processes within the School

  • Participates as a member of the Deans Council and President's Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning and thereby assists with developing and achieving university-wide goals, policies, mission, vision, and values, serving in a senior policy-making capacity

  • Provides leadership to foster a culture of celebration and gratitude in the School and throughout the university community, intentionally building an ethos formed by RB 34, in which Saint Benedict warns against "the evil of murmuring"

  • Prepares, submits, disburses, and works within the budget of the School while facilitating the development of allocations and approval of expenditures as appropriate

  • Coordinates the recruitment, orientation, and retention of full- and part-time faculty of the School; administers faculty assignments in consultation with academic leaders according to current appointment agreements; ensures present and future space and equipment needs, appropriately seeking resources to meet such needs

  • Evaluates full- and part-time faculty, thereby encouraging excellence in teaching, professional engagement in the School, and faculty development. Provides professional development support to faculty and staff of the School with a view towards deepening understanding and capacity live the mission of the University of Mary

  • Represents the School to the university, to the wider community, and the profession, working closely with the outreach efforts of the School

  • Conducts School and/or department meetings and ensure that the School is managed effectively and efficiently, in a spirit of genuine hospitality

  • Works in active collaboration with the Offices of Mission Advancement and Enrollment Management to ensure the financial goals of both the School and the university are achieved and sustained

  • Finalizes academic scheduling in consultation and collaboration with other academic deans, departmental coordinators, academic counselors, registrar, admissions staff, and student government

  • Serves as a student advocate through the development of activities that contribute to student success and by dealing appropriately with student concerns and problems related to academic areas in accordance with the university's published academic appeal process; guides School policy and practices to improve student recruitment and persistence; works with the Director of Institutional Research to develop strategies to track student recruitment and persistence as part of the School's assessment plan

  • Participates in the institutional assessment process and assists in the establishment of procedures and structures for academic department and program review

  • Develops, recommends, administers, and evaluates, as needed, School policies, regulations, procedures, and practices for effectiveness and compliance with accreditation guidelines as well as federal, state, and system regulations, directives, and guidelines

  • Identifies critical issues, develops background information, collects and analyzes data; prepares position statements and reports on special projects as needed

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

  • Earned terminal degree from an accredited institution

  • Requisite and high-level leadership experience in a field related to the School

  • Rank of Associate Professor or higher in a discipline represented in the School

  • Ability to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of and support for the mission of the university, the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, and the Benedictine Wisdom Tradition

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Evidence of vision, leadership, and personal commitment to the intellectual and academic life

  • Demonstrated ability to team-build, delegate, collaborate, and resolve conflict

  • Ability effectively to lead, inspire, and manage faculty and staff of the School

  • Ability to make timely decisions in a firm, fair, and consistent manner, in accord with Catholic social and moral teaching

  • Commitment to cultivating a learning environment that evaluates and incorporates emerging technologies and methodologies, with a firm grasp of current issues in higher education

  • Ability to foster and strengthen relationships on behalf of the university and the School with businesses, foundations, public servants, alumni, donors, and supporters of the university

  • Ability to interact effectively with relevant campus constituencies

  • Commitment to the philosophy, mission, identity, and goals of the University of Mary

  • Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities

  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Academic Affairs and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict's admonition that all be received as Christ
