Department Description

The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology, & Behavior (NPB) is an academic unit whose mission is to conduct research and provide teaching under the College of Biological Sciences. The units consist of Senate and non-Senate faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, teaching assistants and student assistants.

Job Summary

Under general direction of the CAO, and guided by the Vice-Chair for Teaching and teaching lab faculty, this position has the primary responsibility to manage various operations of all undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Department, as well as to provide administrative and technical expertise. In addition, this position serves as the Department’s Safety Coordinator, Equipment representative, Facilities liaison, as well as manages the animal use for teaching laboratories.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

·         Position requires lifting up to 40 lbs of lab and office equipment and supplies.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·         Position may require occasional flexible schedule including nights, weekends and to prepare materials for lab courses use and animal care.

·         Requires working with hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and different species of animals.

·         May require valid California Driver’s license to transport materials and equipment. -Work in area where there is student traffic and frequent interruptions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·         Bachelors Degree or higher in biological science field, preferably physiology, or equivalent work experience. Basic knowledge of general and analytical chemistry, and animal anatomy and physiology.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Extensive knowledge, skills and ability to perform and instruct physiological and neurobiological techniques and methods, as well as operation of scientific equipment used by teaching laboratories.

·         Ability to operate, maintain and calibrate lab equipment, (such as computers, amplifiers, stimulators, Biopac data acquisition systems, gas analyzers, transducers, water baths, circulators, spectrophotometers, spirometers, blood pressure monitors, laboratory ovens, pH meters, sodium electrodes, refractometer balances, chemical fume hoods, centrifuges, oscilloscopes, and Bolt-Ohm meter, etc.), evaluate equipment proper response, and troubleshoot equipment problems. Knowledge to troubleshoot problems with equipment and labs, and to take initiative to find the best conditions for various experiments.

·         Knowledge of animal use and care, as well as skills to perform various surgeries on different species of animals.

·         Knowledge of basic chemistry, such as nomenclature, formulation, concentrations, and buffering effects in order to prepare solutions and reagents, to assess their properties using pH meters and spectrophotometers, make proper molar concentrations based on molecular weights of chemicals, run standard assays, adjust solution pH, and generate of standard curves.

·         Knowledge of Injury/Illness Prevention Program, Emergency Evacuation guidelines, laboratory safety procedures; as well as basic laboratory hazards, such as toxic and or flammable chemicals, needles, broken glassware, pathogenic drugs, etc, and their safe handling and disposal.

·         Computer skills and ability to work with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing programs. Ability to use/interact with data acquisition.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Ability to modify and repair various lab equipment as needed, using power tools (drill press, grinder, etc) and hand tools (soldering iron, hand saw, etc).

·         Knowledge of basic electricity and electronics, and the ability to understand wiring diagrams and circuit diagrams, as well as the ability to manipulate dials on recording equipment; make fine adjustments of the calibration potentiometers, and to solder wires, cables and interfaces between recording instruments.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of the UC Equipment Management policies and procedures.
