Summary of Duties

Marywood University ( Marywood.edu), a comprehensive Catholic University founded in 1915 and sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Health & Human Services (CHHS). Reporting to the Provost, the new Dean will serve as the primary academic officer and advocate for the College. The Dean will join the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and the Dean of the College of Professional Studies to provide a cohesive vision for all areas of the University's academic activities.

The co-educational University with just over 2,500 students sits on a 115-acre campus in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Marywood integrates an enduring liberal arts tradition and professional disciplines to create a comprehensive learning experience through its undergraduate and graduate programs. In support of the Mission, Goals, and Core Values of Marywood University, the College of Health and Human Services educates undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in an atmosphere of respect, individuality, and flexibility for the best collaborative practices to address current and emerging health and human service needs in a multicultural, interdependent/global environment, and to promote nationally, as well as internationally, recognized scholarship and service. The College of Health and Human Services offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in Athletic Training, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Counseling, Exercise Science, Nursing, Nutrition, Physician Assistant Studies, Psychology, Public Administration, Respiratory Therapy, and Social Work. Additionally the College boasts state-of-the-art athletic facilities, a Human Physiology Laboratory, and a Speech and Hearing Clinic.

As a member of the Academic Council and Deans' Council, the Dean of Health and Human Services is the administrative leader of the College whose work includes close interaction with the other Deans and the University leadership for purposes of planning, budgeting, and outreach, as well as with departments, programs, and faculty to assure effective academic programming, robust faculty development, and persistent student support.

The Dean has representation on the university budget committee, plays an active role in the annual budget planning process, and maintains a close working partnership with advancement, marketing and communications, and admissions and recruitment offices and is an integral part of the university's function from strategic planning to daily operations. The Dean is tasked with representing their departments' and programs' interests as they relate to the university's strategic plan and direction, and with communicating, aligning, and enacting the university's mission, goals, and directives at the department and program level. The dean is essential to the visioning process necessary for the success of the University.

Responsibilities: While the following details are not meant to be exhaustive, they are exemplary of the role the Dean of the College of Health & Human Services will play in the life and growth of the University.

UNIVERSITY STRATEGIC PLANNING AND DIRECTION

The Dean will engage in dialog with their departments and programs regarding unit-level strategic goals and direction, provide insight into past, present, and future issues related to CHHS, and bring insight and knowledge to the senior planning levels to help shape the university's mission, goals, and direction. The Dean communicates and is empowered to carry out the university's strategies at the college or school, department, and program level.

FUNDRAISING AND ADVANCEMENT

The Dean of CHHS will collaborate with university advancement in their outreach to potential donors: this may include the planning and implementation of university fundraising strategies, capital campaigns, and assisting in the identification and cultivation of potential donors to provide the knowledge and link between a donor's interests and the College, department, program, and faculty initiatives.

FISCAL / BUDGET

The Dean plays an important role in assisting with setting budget priorities for the University and for their college, school, and programs, such as the funding of faculty and staff positions, support for tenure-track and clinical faculty, space expansion or renovation, and equipment purchases. The Dean also helps their College understand the link between performance and budget priorities, provide oversight and review of unit budgets, understanding institutional priorities, and are good fiscal stewards of institutional funds.

ADMISSIONS / RECRUITMENT / RETENTION

The Dean will collaborate with the admissions / recruitment / retention offices to assist with the planning and forecasting process and develop strategies and target goals for the College and school programs. The Dean is part of a comprehensive campus-wide recruitment and retention strategy that engages all units at the university in recruitment and retention efforts; this is integrated throughout the cycles. The Dean is responsible for ensuring that effective strategies are carried out at the College, school, and program level.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION

The Dean works with the marketing and communication team to develop effective strategies for promoting and marketing programs within the college or school. The Dean CHHS is uniquely qualified to assure that strategies for promoting and marketing the academic programs align with admission strategies and the overall university mission.

COLLEGE/SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

The Dean will represent, advocate for, and promote the College of Health & Human Sevices within the University and to the general public. The Dean will promote all aspects of teaching and scholarly activity; guide and mentor tenure-track and clinical faculty; supervise all faculty and staff; manage faculty, staff, and student issues; provide general oversight of the CHHS; monitor course scheduling and enrollment management; direct and participate in faculty search processes; develop external funding for program support; oversee relevant accreditation processes; and administer college and school budgets.

Requirements:

  • A commitment to the mission and values of Marywood must be demonstrated

  • A terminal degree from an accredited University or College that is in a discipline within or closely related to the College of Health & Human Services

  • A minimum of three years of recent experience in a departmental or university-level academic leadership role

  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience in higher education

  • Faculty rank of at least the level of Associate Professor

Requirements

Educational:

A terminal degree from an accredited University or College that is in a discipline within or closely related to the College of Health & Human Services.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of three years of recent experience in a departmental or university-level academic leadership role.

  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience in higher education

  • Faculty rank of at least the level of Associate Professor
