Job Summary

The Barber lab (https://dbarberlab.ucsf.edu ) in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology on the Parnassus Campus is seeking a Staff Research Associate to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. Our biochemistry and cell biology lab primarily focuses on how intracellular pH dynamics regulates cell functions and behaviors. Our studies are across scales from molecules to recombinant proteins to clonal cells to organoids, and they interface with diseases, predominantly cancers and neurodegenerative disorders.

The successful candidate is anticipated to work as a part of teams with current postdoctoral fellows and graduate students as well independently on autonomous projects with PI supervision. Experimental skillsets will include but not be limited to 1) generating recombinant proteins and biochemical assays, 2) the cell biology of clonal normal, cancer, and stem cells, and 3) maintaining and phenotypic and genomic analysis including RNAseq of organoids from clonal cells as well as human biopsies. Expertise with at least one of these skillsets is required. The successful candidate will in part also be selected based on their initiative for independent thinking and engagement in conceptual and experimental learning.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Founded in 1881, the UCSF School of Dentistry has striven to educate the leading practitioners, scholars and faculty members of the next generation. The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology (CTB) is a basic science department within the School of Dentistry. The department was established in 2005 and includes 15 faculty with primary appointments and five faculty with secondary appointments. Additionally, the department is home to numerous postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate students in programs ranging from Biomedical Sciences, Tetrad and Biophysics to Developmental & Stem Cell Biology and Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. Faculty research interests include cell biology mechanisms relevant to cytoskeletal dynamics, development, metabolism, cancer, immunology and neurobiology.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
