Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in soil health, climate change adaptation and mitigation in semi-arid climates
The Soil Biodiversity and Health laboratory of Dr. Cristina Lazcano is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the areas of soil health and agroecology. The successful candidate will work within the framework of a large, multidisciplinary and multistate project investigating the effect of vermicompost on soil health, C sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. The successful candidate will:

  • Establish a series of 12 field trials in California and Washington (USA) in collaboration with our industry partner Biofiltro.
  • Assess effects of vermicompost on soil C, GHG emissions and hydraulic properties (infiltration, water holding capacity, pore size distribution).
  • Work with an existing sample collection and database to evaluate relationships between soil physical properties and water in response to management.
  • Participate in a meta-analysis to determine how cover crops alone or combined with other soil health practices drive soil health properties and in particular hydraulic functions of relevance for drought resilience and aquifer recharge.

  • Responsibilities:
  • Establish 12 field trials in collaboration with partner growers.
  • Supervision of a lab technician.
  • Collaborate with a PhD student on a systematic review and meta-analysis.
  • Design a field sampling campaign and directly communicate with growers.
  • Collect soil samples in remote field locations in different weather conditions.
  • Process and analyze soil samples.
  • Data curation and analysis.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present at professional conferences.
It is expected that the postdoc will lead a minimum of two high-impact peer reviewed scientific articles with the supervision of Dr. Lazcano and collaborators. In addition, it is expected that the postdoc will supervise a PhD student and undergraduate student assistant.
