Schedule: Mon - Fri, Weekend and Evening hours as need during peak season; hours not to exceed 29 hours per week.

Position Summary

The Bookstore Assistant, Technology provides positive customer experience by promoting technology products and answering questions. This position suggests products and solutions to best support the customer. This role also stocks products and creates visually interesting displays. The Bookstore Assistant, Technology will also support technology product training for employees, as directed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Customer Service

  • Provides direct support to customers in the technology areas of the Bookstore.

  • Responds to customer inquiries and phone calls.

  • Assists customers on the retail floor, as necessary.

  • Assists with technology product questions, problems and exchanges within the guidelines of the Columbus State Bookstore Return Policy.

  • Assists with technology product training for employees.

Inventory and Sales

  • Ensures product areas are stocked, labeled and ensures the retail floor is clean.

  • Merchandises the retail floor with incoming technology products.

  • Participates in store inventory and cycle counts.

  • Creates visually interesting tech displays in key locations.

  • Promotes and sells technology products.

  • Maintains working knowledge of Bookstore practices and uses that knowledge to make reasonable judgement calls on the sales floor, on a situational basis.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend all department meetings and required trainings. *Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

Usual Physical Requirements

  • Normal retail working conditions.

  • Employee regularly stands for extended periods of time, walks, and sits.

  • Regularly uses hands to lift and reaches with hands or arms.

  • Employee converses verbally with others in person or by telephone.

  • Vision demands include relatively detailed vision.

  • Employee frequently interacts with customers and other employees.

  • Employee climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls, and lifts up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Typical retail environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of: Bookstore policies and procedures; technology products; standard retail and merchandising practices and procedures.

  • Skill in: verbal and written communications; excellent listening skills; maintaining good public relations; superior customer service; basic computer applications and office equipment; sales techniques for technology products.

  • Ability to: effectively answer technology product questions; promote products; work independently or as part of a team; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, students, telephone users and general public; think creatively to find solutions; exercise sound judgment while working on a sales floor; exhibit a pleasant public manner and telephone etiquette; develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the College and community; effectively work with persons of varying cultures and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency (GED).

  • One (1) year of customer service or sales experience. *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate. 

  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
