THE COLLEGE:

Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a public community college serving over 4,800 people annually in credit courses and credit-free workshops. Known for the caring and supportive attitude of the faculty and staff, and for the broad support it enjoys from the surrounding community, the college is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition to a strong Liberal Arts focus, the College offers a wide variety of innovative and successful programs including Gender and Women's Studies, Fine Arts, Nursing, Renewable Energy, and Outdoor Leadership, as well as varied learning environments, from traditional classrooms, to distance learning, peer tutoring, one-on-one faculty-student advising, workforce development, and learning communities that cater to specific needs and interests. Close to fifty percent of Greenfield Community College students transfer to four-year colleges, and it is Smith College's largest source of community college transfer students. Much of the College has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation that incorporates universal design principles to meet the needs of all our students. Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching a wide range of mathematics courses from amongst the following: Developmental arithmetic and algebra, problem solving, college algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics;

  • Staffing our Math Studio;

  • Academic advising for approximately 18 students;

  • Maintaining four weekly office hours;

  • Serving on college committees as elected or appointed;

  • Attending regularly scheduled departmental, divisional, and college meetings;

  • Updating curriculum and contributing to program development;

  • Contributing to program learning outcomes assessment activities and year-end reporting;

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and a Master's degree in a closely related field;

  • Successful experience teaching mathematics;

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach students with diverse backgrounds and needs;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff, faculty colleagues and administrators;

  • Evidence of understanding of the mission of the community college;

  • Evidence of familiarity with innovations in the teaching of mathematics;

  • Demonstrated ability to help students understand and use mathematics in a variety of contexts.

  • Successful experience teaching mathematics with an emphasis on reasoning, understanding and problem-solving, rather than rote memorization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated successful community college teaching experience;

  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching a wide range of college level mathematics courses in a college;

  • Successful completion of at least 18 graduate credits in mathematics;

  • Three or more years of experience teaching undergraduate mathematics courses in a college;

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse abilities and academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural composition of community college students, faculty, and staff;

  • Evidence of curriculum development for college mathematics courses;

  • Evidence of using technology to enhance the teaching of mathematics;

  • Demonstrated participation in and commitment to professional development.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

These are MCCC/MTA Unit Positions. Every interviewee will be asked to submit a portfolio of recent curriculum they have used, which demonstrates what they believe are best practices in the teaching of college mathematics courses. (Please do not submit this information until you are specifically requested to do so.) In addition, all interviewees will be asked to present a teaching demonstration to the committee and possibly a wider audience. Finalists may be asked to teach a class composed of GCC students.

RANK AND SALARY: Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience in keeping with the collective bargaining agreement. Anticipated salary range is $46,687 - $62,640. The appointment salary is based on the classification compensation structure and it is unlikely the offered salary will be at or near the top of the range.
